how do you learn without a school system? Being real too, without a syllabus or a lecturer directing my learning, i find it impossible to just learn something. Teach me!

@CLEANTEETH ok im the worst person to ask this advice cause im currently still in academia, BUT! I continue my learning in the summer when I’m off and don’t have the structure and here’s how: 1. Figure out what you really wanna learn about! Are you interested in science? math? activism? politics? Iā€˜m super into postcolonial and subaltern studies, and the general histories of marginalized peoples (through intersections of gender, class, race, sexuality and more!) - honestly however, which ever subject you enjoy I’d always suggest taking a critical approach to it too, question things that seem like they’re ā€œneutral,ā€ there’s a book called ā€œLaboratory Lifeā€ that speaks about how quantifiable data often creates the reality it seeks to describe, it’s super interesting! (Also Foucaul’s writing on Epistemology and the book ā€œThe Structure of Scientific Revolutionsā€ by Thomas Kuhn is very interesting) 2. look for video essays or prominent scholars about the topic youre interested in. For example, last summer I got really into philosophy and just started watching videos about topics I knew nothing about like Absurdism, Nihilism etc. Watching the video essays introduced me to prominent authors in the topic such as Kafka, or Camus. I ended up reading many books on the topics too and by extension, I started falling deeper into the world of it and reading papers/books by authors Id never heard of 3. This might sound counterintuitive, but spend some time on social media scrolling through the thing you want to learn. in terms of postcolonial studies, I’ve found many scholars and their works just by consuming that content on social media often. and when those scholars refer to other scholars, I end up reading up on them too. It’s like falling down a wormhole of people just constantly referring to other works. I know this probably is not the best help but it’s all I have 🪦.I’m sure someone would be able to give you better advice!

Isn't it exciting?? I feel like I'm constantly being humbled by new information. And there are more ways than ever to learn new things! More platforms, more people to know, more places to see. As someone who enjoys being right (yikes), I'm working on leaning into the intrigue of being wrong, or in the dark. I worked out today and actually drank water... which is probably why I feel this way. Take it with a grain of salt and check back in tomorrow!

i love finally understanding a topic or concept, it’s so gratifying and empowering when you can apply new knowledge to your life even if it’s not practical i love being able to have in depth conversations about what my friends and i are learning and all the ups and downs that come with it to learn and grow is such a part of the human experience to me, but not just humans do it- everything does it the trees, the grass, your cat- to learn is mother earthā€˜s gift to us all

Engaging in things such as ā€œfan warsā€ ā€œshipsā€ ā€œfan gossipā€ is essentially engaging in politics without some of the ethical strain so long as you’re not actively harming anyone and just having discourse about something. It also tells me a lot about what a persons actual politics probably are.
