I feel like Pavement have really thrown in a sharp left turn with their own self directed biopic. It’s self aware and deadpan, willing to make fun of itselfjust like their music is.

Regardless of like what their estate says for me it feels nasty to watch a film depicting someone's actual life who's dead. I just don't feel comfortable watching that

i don’t mind an occasional remake or biopic but its gotten out of hand. i haven’t seen a new movie in theaters in like 4 years because they all look so shitty.

Yeah, most biopics in general. They mostly tell the exact same story with the names and wigs swapped out. If you’re going to tell a true story, at least focus on something interesting, not just their origin story.

It’s also the same plot more or less. Having them struggling with some form of addiction, having complicated relationships with their wives/girlfriends, being abused and/or being abusive. I’s tired

I agree! mostly because I can't help but feel like the recent influx of them feel more like they're made to be money grabs. It doesn't feel sincere, and a documentary is an awesome way of telling someone's story and they can be really good. but ig if you wanna make a movie, a biopic's story is already there.

@CHAMOMILEMISTY agree it feels insincere and they just feel so over-sensationalized and the final result often leaves me disappointed
hard disagree there’s nothing i love more than the tragic tale of a monumental talent and the movie usually spurs me to do a deep dive and seek out the live performance recordings i would have otherwise not thought to seek out!
@MYRA I agree it can give great artists more exposure, esp to younger generations!
Hard agree. Unless we get a biopic about Animal from the muppets I don’t want it.

i wouldn’t say all biopics, but i have had ENOUGH of these castings for recent ones. i can say that a complete unknown was at least a well done film, but i truly just felt like i was watching timothee chalamet doing a bob dylan impression on SNL the whole time...AND they iphone faced joan baez. don’t get me started on the beatles cast that just got announced…

@CAROLINEBREEDEN yes you’ve captured exactly what I was trying to get at! I’m not against the concept in general but I think these producers need to be a little more discerning. saw the Bob Dylan pic and it was entertaining enough but I don’t feel like I gleaned anything new or groundbreaking from it. And was also very disappointed w the casting of Joan. Especially when productions like Scorcese’s Rolling Thunder Revue exists. All that real and gorgeous footage knocked my socks off. And the Beatles biopic smdh idk i just feel like there is no heart behind it. And then there’s the Beatles ‘get back’ docuseries with all that beautiful footage. I'd rather watch the originals do their thing!

@IMKHUSHI that’s fair! Maybe a hot take on my part. I won’t say ~all~ music biopics but I just feel like they are really churning them out in recent years and the market is a little over saturated. But I also love Walk the Line w Joaquin Phœnix and Reese Witherspoon And feel like that one in particular has done the genre the most justice
