eating a meal without watching something. sounds weird but its only like 10 minutes of quietly enjoying food and then its over and you realize how peaceful it was to do literally one thing. then you try driving without music and that is also nice. and then ur like oh maybe i can simply organize my closet without thinking of all the other things i need to do. maybe i can do one thing at a time, which gives me more time to do more things
Whenever I feel screen-bad and I know I want to do something else I do like a buffer activity to give myself time to decide what the ultimate goal is. Its helpful for me if it’s something that involves water so my phone can’t come with me and I’m really resetting my day, like doing the dishes or taking a shower. Things I like to do once I’ve amped up to it:
-Tinker, found some free frames on the street and spent the afternoon painting and fixing them with whatever I had around.
-Fancy errands like going to specialty shops (bakery, butcher, wine shop) then dinner becomes the project with whatever you’ve scrounged.
-Be a member of something, it will guilt you into going (pool, museum, local movie theater)
-just do one thing, there’s so much multi tasking asked of us and our attention, just doing one thing feels great sometimes (just eating, just drinking a hot bev, just listening to an album all the way through, just doing the dishes- I think I love doing the dishes?)
I 100% feel where you’re coming from and often struggle in the same way!
i don’t think it’s healthy for the mind. doing one thing at a time requires focus and it’s how we stay present. it’s often rare to avoid thinking about the past, future, or the multiple crazy things going down in the present. finding something that requires your whole brain to think about is is so crucial and grounding, to be immersed in something other than yourself. i guess that’s why waiting rooms are so daunting - who wants to sit around, wait, and do nothing? obviously that’s a place to doom-scroll or read people mag or whatever. anyways when you’re not waiting around, just do one thing at a time dude
even if it’s as sample as watching TV it helps my brain if I just focus on that one thing. It’s easy to get into the habit on being on your phone while something is playing so I’ve been trying to avoid that. I feel more intentional with what I’m doing when I try not to multitask 😌
