My high school French teacher made me hate learning languages. But now that I’m an adult, I’ve realized I can learn whatever language I want, in whatever way works for me. So I’m healing my inner teenager now by learning a language I actually want to learn on my own terms.
Also is it just me, or does anyone else kind of miss taking vocabulary tests?

I am currently using a combination of five things to learn. Two books one for learning grammar and one with simple short stories and vocabulary, Duolingo, the r/spanish subreddit and Spanish media on YouTube or Netflix.
There’s just something about that scratches an itch I can’t rightly describe. Learning languages feels good and opens so many doors, it activates a part of my brain that I don’t think I’ve used enough. This year I’m trying to get back on the habit of learning Mandarin (which I studied for eight years, yet still feel woefully inadequate speaking), Yiddish (which I spent one year learning, but have since lapsed), and/or French (which I’ve never tried to learn, but there’s a first for everything!)
I must admit that at first I didn’t enjoy my French class (le prof parle trop lentement), but it’s starting to grow on me! I’ve adopted the mindset that learning does not have to be the fast, competitive process I experienced at school. Language comes slowly and there is something to learn from everyone.
