it's my understanding that americans get away with SMS and iMessage, but the european experience is juggling WhatsApp and Signal and Discord and Instagram and Facebook Messenger... Beeper fixes this. download one app for the sake of muting six. it's a fair trade.

this app, not really an app, has actually been around for something like 149 years and it is fantastic I've been down the searching for the perfect messaging app rabbit hole more times and for more hours than I care to confess. I got the people in my life on Google Hangouts. Then dragged them to Whatsapp. Then convinced them to move over to Signal. I realize that I was looking for something that an app couldn't satisfy: a healthier/better way of communicating. Lately I've just been loving having phone calls with people. Or Facetime or zoom convos. It's real and dynamic. What's some of what you are looking for?

Signal offers fully encrypted messaging. Apple Messages and WhatsApp are typically encrypted but there are cases and circumstances when messaging through these services are not, which means that data could be turned over to a government agency. You don't have to wonder with Signal. Linked is a simple guide to Signal and encryption a current Federal worker put together for their colleagues in light of the current admin. Sign up is simple and messaging is no different than any other texting app.

it's only like 11°C outside in Dublin right now but the sensation of sunlight helps to elevate the cruel existence of Computer Work. so, fuck it! balcony season! allowing the Macbook to experience its true natural habitat of Somewhere That Isn't My Desk has made me a bit more appreciative of its possibilities. last summer I took the idea to its logical end point and brought my cheap usb dj controller out on the balcony with me, recording DJ sets for nobody in particular on my headphones as the sun sets. those days approach once more. now if only I could solve the glare problem

the privacy-focused search engine DuckDuckGo has the idea of "Bangs". throwing !g at the end of a search fires it over to google, !w to wikipedia, !r to reddit etc. there are thousands of these, and it lets you get very intentional about where you want to search for information; not just relying on one tool for every job. outside of the bangs feature, well, ddg is... fine. it's not immune to spam, but at least it hasn't implemented an AI that lies to you. yet.
