Reading books you don't fully understand.
I'm reading blood meridian. Its sad and hard to read and I'm not sure I fully understand it. But i can't stop thinking about it and I keep wanting to pick it up. I'm hoping there's some second-hand spirituality and insight im gaining by fumbling through the pages. If not, the ride alone has been fulfilling in its own way. Maybe the things you don't understand are the only things worth thinking about. Or maybe thats just what an idiot like me tells himself.

incredible book. The Judge is such a haunting character. Also don't fully understand it. Wrestling with things you don't understand is so rewarding. and you can always look up papers and criticism of the thing after you finish to dig deeper.

collect books that call to you that you have no timeline to actually read. open to the random page. do that repetitively with no finish point. Could end up being your moral compass. Could end up being your own spiritual text.

Reading things you know/think you won’t like- intensely
Maybe it unlocks a secret passion in you. Maybe it clues in on your friend who raves about it but you just don’t get it. Maybe it’s just an exercise in endurance! I think regardless you learn something about yourself or the world or both. there is no such thing as a wasted moment if you don’t let it be :)

School made us think reading is a holy act. It is not. Its just something to do. Like watching a movie or sports. You aren’t going to be tested by anyone. Read high. Read drunk. Read 2 pages. Read half awake. Remember nothing or just some of it. It really doesn’t matter

ugly/normal/weird-looking people in music
I feel like growing up every band or musician besides super huge pop stars was just normal looking. Not weird in a cool way and not perfectly curated. Just actually weird or actually normal. I miss that. Everyone is too hot now. To quote Silver Jews, "What's with all the handsome grandsons In these rock band magazines? What have they done with the fat ones? The bald and the goateed?" We need more normals in music.
