i love when comedy is smart. comedy is so often just making random jokes at someone elseās expense. but Nathan Fielder makes it about the collective human experience by finding the humor in the awkward and surreal moments we all exepreince. on a surface level, itāll make you laugh. but on a deeper one, itāll remind you that comedy is so much better when it connects us through the truth.Ā

Your 90% figure is something I use to describe how much art media is basically not good ā tv, movies, music, etc. But the particularity of standup as an art form ā the bizarre mutual expectation of a specific response (laughter) ā means that it can āfailā more obviously. Mediocre music can be shrugged off, and pretty easily tolerated by most; it doesnāt come with the same expectations. But when someoneās jokes don't land, it immediately lays bare a devastating rift between performer and audience.
Most people just want to laugh, though, and theyāre ok with laughing at anything that purports to be funny. You make a joke about the difference between men and women, I laugh, everyone goes home happy. So thereās a lot of trash that ends up getting elevated because itās āgoodā enough to fulfill this social contract for enough people.
But thereās always good stuff out there!

A lot of popular comedians Iām not really a fan of. Iām not about ones that are way over the top. Show me your smarts!
Josh Johnson is one I love getting the news from. Heās filling me in, in the funniest way. Plus, heās coming up with new material every week without relying on crowd work.
Another I really love is Nate Bargatze. Heās kind of wholesome??? Like, I could recommend him to all ages and heād be funny. But heās not innocent, if that makes sense.
Chris Fleming is my favorite weirdo out there and Iāll always recommend š«¶
Anyway, Iām brain dead because I havenāt eaten enough today but I hope this helps!!! š
