I did a podcast episode about the 2000s blogging site Xanga and someone reached out saying they used to be in a Xanga role-playing community. We met up for coffee and realized we're both writers with physical media collections who enjoy Lindsay Lohan movies, unreleased Britney Spears songs, and the fact that Gerard Way used to work at Hot Topic in the Willowbrook Mall. We've been friends ever since :)

we were 17 and i was on the animal collective side of tumblr and he was on the arctic monkeys side of tumblr. we both liked vampire weekend tho. i followed him through a mutual and we would reply back and forth sometimes until he added me on facebook and then messaged me that we should smoke weed together while he was on wisdom teeth medication (he lived in NJ and i lived in texas). then we just kept talking!
we went to college 6 hours apart and planned to meet halfway (louisville) so we met irl at a jamba juice and then spent the weekend stoned listening to radiolab in an econolodge. the first night we heard commotion outside and there were fireworks going off lol.
4 years of long distance in college + moved across the country together twice. just got married. as we were making the exit from our wedding, fireworks were going off

She was in a band with someone who was in film class with me in high school. A couple years later, I saw her on Instagram.
She posted about the Trueanon coverage of the Ghislaine Maxwell trial and I dmed her to tell her members of the public could just go (I had attended prior).
We exchanged dms back and forth and met for pizza a couple months later. I hinted at romantic interest via genuine enthusiasm about seeing her every following weekend. She hinted at it by suggesting we watch “Beyond the Valley of the Dolls” together.
Moral of the story: your opening message must not just stand out, it must be truly bizarre.

Pretty much at the start of high school there was this guy who was kinda friends with my friends but for whatever reason we just did NOT like each other at all. Anyway, at the time I was obsessed with VH1s …Of Love reality shows, I’m talking rock of love, flavour of love, charm school, I love money the whole lot. After about a year of me and this guy not liking each other, we get put in the same group for sport and he comes up to me and says that he saw that I had some of the cast from those shows as friends on MySpace (yes MySpace) and I was like “wait… you watch them too”. Long story short, we’ve been best friends for almost 20 years.
