I began canoeing back in 2016 when my husband was gifted a canoe by his landlord. I had never done much canoeing, but immediately took to it.Ā  Being on the river felt like entering a magical space. Although we were near humanity, it still felt separate, immersed in the gentle flow of the river and energy surrounding it.Ā  We witness Great Blue Herons, Cranes, turtles, muskrats, beavers. We’ve halted paddling to watch deer graze. We work our way over rocks when the water is low, lift our paddles to let the current carry us. We’ve rescued a stray dog, cleaned up debris.Ā  We’ve canoed in lakes, entering secret places covered in water lilies. We’ve canoeed in the Long Island Sound, the coast becoming tiny as we explored around the islands.Ā  Being on the water is such a special way to experience these spaces I often am in. It is a way to experience the magic of nature that is respectful and at one with it. In 2020, being able to still go out on the river was one of the few fine threads that kept me tethered to the goodness of the world.Ā  I now pay closer attention to the bodies of water I cross over or drive next to, thinking about whether or not we’d be able to get access to explore. We make a point to go out on the water with our family, many of them using kayaks. I’m grateful to have found another way to experience our natural world, and it’s one I hope to share with many more friends.

I live in a desert city, so we only have one river, but I absolutely love canoeing in it. It is also a little bit of a defiant act, because the river is dirty and has lots of trash and people generally don't like this river very much. But exploring by canoe is such a magical experience! So many birds and animals and the way the tress smell is just the best.

I am very fortunate to have married into a family that live right on a lake in Wisconsin. We go up a few times over the summer and boat, swim, kayak/canoe, water ski. It’s always a lovely time. This summer we’re also visiting Connecticut. My mother was raised in a small town on the coast and I used to spend the whole summer there growing up. My aunties and a sister all still live there, so the rest of us plan to go at the same time. This is the first year since I had my wedding reception there I’ll be spending more than a long weekend. I’m so, so excited! Swimming in the ocean is my favorite thing ever!! It’s one of my top 3 favorite places on earth. I have nothing but good memories from all my years visiting. That’s it for us because of money and Work, but I feel very, very fortunate to even take these trips!!!

I was lucky enough to visit both Connecticut and Missouri this summer. I usually do every other, but my whole family was going to be in Connecticut so my two kids and I went just for the weekend. I got to see my younger sisters that live in Spain for the first time in two years. This summer has flown by and I am making a point to enjoy the rest of the season as much as possible. This is the first year in the last couple that I haven’t been looking forward to the next thing. I avert my gaze every time I’m in a store that already has Halloween stuff out. Let’s just be where we are, shall we?

Humans have always danced. It is part of who we are, yet we have been conditioned to be self conscious, to think that we do not move our bodies good enough. Dancing is beyond judgement. Dancing is not a skill, it is our soul moving through our bodies, expressed in movement. Dancing is healing. Dancing is bodily autonomy. Dancing is FUN! Any feeling you are feeling can be moved through with dance yet even alone, you fear looking foolish. Kill the judge in your mind, shut the fuck up, and MOVE 🌊

In Tarot, The Fool is the first card in the Major Arcana, which represents the life cycle.Ā These cycles we are continuously going through in our lives, not just once.Ā The final card of the Major Arcana is The World (which I have tattooed very large on my thigh), which signifies the completion of a cycle and natural ascension into the next.Ā We are then thrust back into the Fool, with a bit more wisdom. The Fool as an archetype is one of joy, curiosity, spontaneity, and trust.Ā  The Fool is pure of heart, knowing that the Universe has got their back.Ā  This innate trust allows The Fool to be playful, to take risks, and truly believe everything will work out.Ā  The more we go through life and experience loss, grief, heartache, trauma, the harder it becomes to embrace this energy.Ā  I’ve found that as healing goes on, just as it’s shown in tarot, we return to this natural state of being.Ā We start off as The Fool when we are wee little babies, and if we are lucky can return there a few cycles at a time, with more wisdom gained each time.Ā Ā  The goal of The Fool is to have positive experiences, maybe for fun, maybe to grow.Ā There is an acceptance with The Fool, a kind of ā€œthis is what is, how can I make this work well for me?ā€ Everything works out for The Fool because they don’t know it can’t. Anything we go through in life, we can use to grow.Ā  I personally believe we all could benefit embracing the archetypal energy of The Fool a bit more.Ā  The Fool doesn’t stop to worry what other people will think!Ā  The Fool does not fret about what if’s!Ā  The Fool is in the moment!
