I know a lot of people can relate to this song for various reasons but I can relate to it most in the way I see my life after my schizophrenia developed (around pandemic time). not knowing where to go to fit in with others, my academic failing after I was suddenly hit with near constant anhedonia and knowing I have the intelligence to succeed but being unable to apply it anymore, losing friends I didnt even know were fair weather friends, and, of course, feeling very sad. I know the lyrics are probably more of a depression thing but knowing that Brian Wilson also has schizoaffective disorder and knowing how our negative symptoms manifest makes it feel all the more relatable to me. like I said though, even non psychotic people can definitely relate to this track and I think it's really easy to see your own life reflected in the lyrics. plus, the backing track and vocals themselves are beautiful

i value repetition & loudness (volume & atmosphere) for my meltdown music . both of these songs (by julian casablancas & the voidz + sufjan stevens) have almost meditative flows that you can tap into especially when listening loud & on repeat , building until they are all encompassing . the heavy distorted riff in sadness & the mantra of i want to be well (i‘m not fucking around!) have been steady accompaniments to many of my meltdowns , spiritual & otherwise . tbt to scream/crying i want to be well in the car on calgary highways 🤘🥲

“You can find me drifting slowly Sinking beneath the sea Try to catch my breath A silent struggle drowned in my apathy” I‘ve only recently gotten into emo music, and this is a perfect depiction of the resigned frustration so many people suffering from depression have. Not to mention an amazing switch up towards the end. Watched it in concert in Berkeley and the crowd surfing was insane.

since the first day of middle school (and i remember this cus it felt like a Very Big Day for me) my alarm has been set as Walk Don't Run by The Ventures cus i was a little surf guitar loving dweeb. u would think i'd be tired of it after 15 yrs of setting multiple alarms to wake myself up/take my meds etc but i'm not! people always comment on how nice it is when they hear it too... esp my granddad ^_^

like many baristas my age, i had an affinity for french pop music as a highschooler, particularly "yé-yé", which was what they called 60's pop! i was down with a bad case of main character syndrome (a common symptom of being a teenager) so i loved the drama of it all - chic and taboo like smoking secret cigarettes 🙄 i was also taking french in school - i was terrible at it but being able to vaguely understand the lyrics helped me to appreciate it even more. flash fwd a few years & i was finally presented with the opportunity to travel to france!!! i never ever thought i'd get to see paris but the stars aligned and i spent a week there in summer 2023 with my fiancé and my dad (which was particularly special bc i never get to travel with him) 🥺 it was incredibly romantic (despite the lack of air conditioning...wtf europe) and i had also gotten my garçon into the french music i'd loved as a teen so our visit was soundtracked by the likes of françoise hardy, jacqueline taïeb, jacques brel, sylvie vartan, jacques dutronc, jane birkin, serge gainsbourg (melody nelson holds up if i pretend i don't know what he's saying!!) etc 🥰 the video i linked is one of the only videos i took while in paris, and it's possibly my fav video i've taken ever - the little girl i accidentally caught dancing in front of the eiffel tower makes me smile every time i watch it.
