Don’t underestimate the talent and creativity of toddlers and preschoolers. From working in child care for several years I can say that I’ve been truly inspired by some of the art these kids make. Itā€˜s like the purest form of expressionism. Child art is spontaneous, passionate, whimsical, and free. When young kids make art, a lot of their process is the experience of mark making. To a toddler, art is discovery and play. This process inspires my own work now. I create with the intent to play and learn, not to produce a masterpiece. I’ve found that the less I think about the end result, the more confident and free I am in my choices. Practice naĆÆvetĆ© and joy in your art and I promise you will create work that reflects your spirit. Reconnect with your inner child artist :) (All of these images are from toddlers I have worked with)

i make things as a hobby, whether it be bits of music, awful drawings, writing, whatever, and i find that i work best after admiring others’ art. maybe it inspires me, maybe it’s just how things work in my head, but i feel that art, or any sort of creation, comes from creation, and so, itā€˜s ALRIGHT to use something else as a reference point, or rather, consume something before you create!! i like just sitting with something for a while, eventually something pops into my mind and gets my thoughts going. sitting with an instrument and messing around makes it easier to make something up, or scribbling makes it easier to think of what to draw. also, doing what’s best for you, whether that be taking ages to come up with an idea, and even longer to see it through, or making lots in a small amount of time. YOU do whatever is best for YOU, and probably your sanity. just generally loll have a lovely day slayyyy šŸ’•

Research is the number one deterrent when it comes to making art, because it’s the fastest way to see if what you want to make ā€œhas been done beforeā€ (that’s in air-quotes because we all know deep down that NOTHING has been done the same way that we’re doing it). Imagine the art that would flow out of you without any sort of ā€œbut what will THEY think of itā€ hang-ups. That’s really what we all want to see, right? We want to see the most surprising, most vulnerable, most specific-to-your-mind-right-now type shit. The more you care about that one person that kinda did something sorta like it one time, the less you’re gonna make anything. You can always research after the fact, if you’re really hung up on it… but at least you will have made something! Making things feels amazing.

I have always adored art ever since I was in preschool. I loved creating characters or even doing my own renditions on characters and movies. I even took time during lockdown to work on my interest, putting in hours of learning anatomy and structure. However for a while I've been in a slump of sorts, I've lost creativity and the fuel to continue. It's been hard, especially since drawing and creating is something I've been putting effort to what seems like eons at this point. I even decided to just quit altogether and pursue something else as a dream career. There had become a point where my boyfriend gave me a pep talk and to prove his point he had read me a book he wad reading for philosophy called 'The Republic'; "All great things are precarious... Beautiful things really are difficult" and in his own words told me - "It occurs often throughout the text, anything that is easy will never be beautiful, for if it is easy it won't have the scars and marks of something built through struggle, those scars and marks are the cracks through which beautiful shines most brightly", which I think helped me. For the past month in my art class I've been researching a style called 'Jugendstil' and got a bit of inspiration again. I want to show off what I made because I'm genuinely happy with my product since a hot minute. Anyways moral of the story, don't beat yourself up if you don't find something about you or what you make up to your standards, because beautiful things take time.

Look, for a while I did not care about prehistoric art. It was hidden beneath the veil of primitivism. Letā€˜s rewire our contemporary brains and try to view the past a little differently. When looking at prehistoric art, how do you feel? Does it make you excited to imagine a world before your time? Does it seem boring or even uninspired? Maybe you feel confused or disconnected due to the history between yourself and the work that stands before you. No matter how ancient works of art make you feel, it is crucial to learn and recognize the value and importance of these pieces and how they relate to the world around us. Why is it so important? I mean, we are living in the future! We have 3D printers, self-driving cars, and infinite knowledge at our fingertips. Why should we be looking to the past? For starters, we can learn about ourselves by seeing what our ancestors did 10,000 years ago. Prehistoric art is a major influence on contemporary art. Ever since the discovery of cave drawings and ancient Egyptian tombs, artists have been inspired by their primordial selves. The value of looking back is to learn about how it has inspired our own art. What we would consider art from the past, is influenced by the art of an even more distant past, and so on. We can learn about humanity and how we view the world just by looking at how we lived and created art throughout history. It is important to see where we started out so we can see where we are going in the future. Ancient art reveals historical details that we may not have been able to understand had it not been for the art created at the time. All this to say remind yourself that people in the past were people like us, living life and making art. We aren’t so different from our historical siblings.

ā€œFull is not heavy as empty, not nearly, my loveā€ ā€I don’t want a home, I’d ruin that, Home is where my habits have a habitat.ā€ ā€œā€™member when I was so sick and you didn’t believe me? Then you got sick too and guess who took care of you? You hated that, didn’t you, didn’t you?ā€ ā€I ran out of white doves feathers, to soak up the hot piss that comes from your mouth every time you address meā€ ā€œI’m a tulip in a cup, I stand no chance of growing up, I’ve made my peace I’m dead I’m done, I watched you live to have my fun,ā€ I could go on and on but these are just some that came to mind
