when i was about 10 or 11, my mother sat me down and made me watch dead poets society with her, saying it changed her life when it came out in 1989 (when she was around 23). and did it change my life as well. always a poetically-inclined, emotional, sensitive child myself, i saw myself reflected in the boys who blossomed under keatingās tutelage, experiencing the wonders of whitman and salinger for the first time in a world that shuns such expressions, relegating it to a corner of a room or a sunday afternoon. i have never cried as hard at a film repeatedly as i did this one. the themes of friendship and closeness and finding purpose in art is exactly how i try to live my lifeā¦. what a beautiful film i can never see too many times

I seldom cry at movies. I never cry in public at movies. But Aftersun had me crying on a full plane of strangers for multiple hours. itās almost been a week since Iāve seen it and I have thought about it everyday. Itās an extremely quiet film with an incredible way of having a profound impact. The movie is about a trip that a father and daughter make and the daughter is looking back on it years later. It has various topics like father/daughter dynamics, mental health, coming of age, but what I found the most intriguing part was the take on quite masculinity. Most films I have seen that explore the topic of masculinity are in the realm of toxicity or very abrasive and aggressive forms. This movie depicted the type of masculinity I see in my life with my male family and friends and it was heartbreaking but also beautiful. I canāt recommend it enough. It changed how I view people in my life and also myself. It inspired me to open up conversations with my father. And if you donāt have a father, I recommend it as well.

watched in Dec 2020 and it was lifechanging. I relate to Clementine a lot and I was bawling by the end of the movie Iāve seen it about 7-8 times now. Never gets old.

all of mansourās works are gorgeous and so beautifully representative of the palestinian condition (pre and post-intifada) but thereās something about 1985ās āhopeā thatās always stuck with me, much like 1993ās āthe nazareneā (also attached). i cannot recommend looking further into mansourās works enough. follow him on instagram @/sliman.mansour šļø
