this was so funny and silly and heartwarming with a thoughtful and loving portrayal of the gay experience. basically: gender is a construct, binaries are a prison, julie andrews is so hot, and i love how this said so much while saying so little. gay rights!
first english-language film to use the word homosexual!
thought this would be one of those movies that i'd love thinking and reading about way more than actually watching but NO!!! incredible engaging watch from start to finish, i love dirk bogarde so much (and the servant 1963 is one of my fav films ever) i can't believe i haven't seen this before⦠honestly surprised it even got made
a TWELVE SECOND SCREEN KISS BETWEEN KEVIN KLINE AND TOM SELLECK!!!!! OK!!!!! and it's a comedy with a happy ending. also DEBS which i still haven't seen but all my lesbian friends love it dearly. ALSO it's not explicitly gay but pee-wee's big adventure was written directed and starred in by a gay man and pee-wee himself repeatedly expresses total disinterest in the girl who has a crush on him and generally has a fantastic time being unapologetically himself and being totally accepted by everyone despite his eccentricities. i consider that enough to make it gay rep for me personally! and pee-wee's big holiday has a whole storyline with pee-wee basically having a crush on joe manganiello and it culminates with them exchanging friendship bracelets and sharing root beer barrels in pee-wee's tree house, which is really cute.
