Grew up in this unfortunate place. It’s so close as the crow flies that they decided not to give us trains into the city so you functionally need to drive to go anywhere (don’t get me started on the 90 minute Port Authority buses that arrive irregularly and take you all the way down to the Lincoln Tunnel instead of crossing the bridge). The towns themselves vary and some are larger than others, but the county’s vibe skews traditional family and I can’t see anyone under 50 without kids finding any sense of community or integration and I would recommend steering very clear.

i typed this place into google and the second result was ā€œbergen county jailā€ so it seems like you probably are right about this one

I moved to a rent stablized apartment Hoboken right after college and I couldn’t really hack it. Beautiful neighborhood, great food, but my social life pretty much totally collapsed since all my friend + work was based in NYC. You definitely need to move there knowing some friends/family or with a partner/kids. My family is from Jersey City/Hoboken, and I think if you grew up there its probably a great place to live, but ultimately unless you spend most of your time in FiDi or Chelsea don’t expect a ton of access to New York . Going anywhere in Brooklyn takes about an hour minimum when the trains are running and closer to two when they aren’t really running (pretty much any night after 12). I live in with roommates in Brooklyn now and I’m sooooo much happier, but also this was just my experience as someone trying to work as an artist in my early 20s

super chill cute towns like montclair or maplewood if u want a more suburban feel. jersey city and hoboken get u into the city quick and are themselves lil chill cities. i was raised in jersey and my ultimate goal is to be back there when it’s baby time because i couldn’t imagine a siren or random unauthorized construction waking my future sleep deprived ass up.

people will hate me for this but as a new yorker i love going to jersey. it’s always a fun little adventure and nj transit tickets aren’t that expensive. there’s a bunch of good ethnic food that doesn’t cost $15 for an appetizer + people respect you more cause you’re from new york. but you can’t just go to the new york parts of jersey like hoboken, i’m talking new brunswick/metropark/edison CENTRAL JERSEY, that’s where the real shit is

I probably have to pop that cherry today for work and I’m deeply sad since I’ve gotten this far with never once using it, which is the way things should be.
