Be like a woman diagnosed with hysteria in the 18th century. Visit the sea and let it restore your spirit. Drove to the Nubble Lighthouse at 6 in the morning. I brought my journal and wrote two pages sitting on rocks and breathing in the salty air. I feel awake, alive, free, and ready for the rest of the day. Don’t underestimate the healing power of Mother Nature. She is here for us when we treat her with love.

The secret is truly going on walks out in nature. don’t bring your headphones, all you will need is yourself. I started to get really bad anxiety attacks, and found out that nature seems to ground me and allows me to think rationally. Not only that, but nature has this way of helping me to process my day or process my issues head on instead of ignoring them and acting like they don’t exist. I no longer fret about my job, bills or relationships, even though I am still struggling in all three. Right now, you could be putting all of your time and energy into other things that are not you. Be selfish, nurture yourself, drink water, take a walk on a hiking trail or a bike greenway for however long. On harder days, I like to go deep into the trail and sit in silence, listening to the birds chatter and the squirrels chase each other. Once you give nature time, nature gives time back. You will get through this. ❤️

becoming convinced that I don’t have any mental illnesses, just a *severe* case of nature deficiency. sleeping under the stars and biking under the trees and being sweaty and muddy for two days has healed me. 🫱😌🫲

whenever im feeling more lost than usual, in myself or the world, something that really helps me find my center again is just going to the water by myself.  she will always be there for you whether that is through river, pond, fountain, or sea. you will quickly find she wants to take all your troubles away.  try to just sit there with the water and nothing else as best you can, don’t go on your phone, don’t read a book, if you really really need to do something, listen to an album and don’t skip anything or bring a sketchbook to doodle in. just try your very best to be in the moment and nowhere else. if you are at the beach (my favorite place to be with the water) try to keep your eyes on the horizon where the sky meets the ocean. or for any location just look at the patterns on the surface and notice how light dances across it. let the water be a fidget toy for your eyes. there likely will not be any huge aha moment but i promise if you really intentionally spend time with the water, talk to it even, you will leave feeling different in some way. (here is a little collage from my last solo beach day. the most important part is that you do all this by yourself. have a one on one with the water and she will tell you what to do next)

I am partial to abstraction but I wanna highlight a more contemporary representational painter. Mark Tennant‘s work is like painted film photography. His use of light and shadow, the subject matter, just so unique and stunning.

or if you don’t live in a neighborhood, just take pics close to wherever you live. Get different angles, look at the things around you in a new light, see your place like it’s the first time. What excites you? What do you notice that you hadn’t seen before? Take time with the mundane and allow it to surprise and inspire you.

Don’t underestimate the talent and creativity of toddlers and preschoolers. From working in child care for several years I can say that I’ve been truly inspired by some of the art these kids make. It‘s like the purest form of expressionism. Child art is spontaneous, passionate, whimsical, and free. When young kids make art, a lot of their process is the experience of mark making. To a toddler, art is discovery and play. This process inspires my own work now. I create with the intent to play and learn, not to produce a masterpiece. I’ve found that the less I think about the end result, the more confident and free I am in my choices. Practice naïveté and joy in your art and I promise you will create work that reflects your spirit. Reconnect with your inner child artist :) (All of these images are from toddlers I have worked with)
