Gardening is one of the greatest hobbies you could ever start and Iā€˜ve been really lucky in that the challenges I have faced have been minor. That was until the fungus gnats appeared. Every morning, waking up to 4-6 flying around, killing them, and yhen checking my plants to see if there’s any more (surprise! there always is). Then it’s the googling. Looking at every website and reddit post trying to find any kind of solution. Do you get the pesticide, maybe try cinnamon, a combination of things? And then it’s the testing, seeing what options are sustainable, not too harmful, all while being effective. Finally you see some progress, the gnats are dying, you’re finding less, and you feel good. Until you wake again to 4-6 gnats flying around until you kill them.

Especially if these are just indoor potted plants. Also baking the dirt if you are repotting and are concerned your soil is contaminated

I got rid of mine with sticky traps. Had to buy them on amazon unfortunately but you just peel off the sticky parts and they stand up in the dirt and collect em. Went from swatting away multiple every day to none

arghhh fungus gnats are the WORST! I have to flush out the drains with boiling water praying I kill enough of their eggs.

This rec directly conflicts with my previous rec about ā€œmaking peace with having a few bugs inside.ā€ I can deal with flies and gnats, but baby.. I draw the line at wasps. The warmth of spring has the wasps around my apartment stepping out in full force, and they are just dying to move in with me. I read online that peppermint deters wasps, so I planted a ton outside on my balcony. I have not seen a single wasp in a WEEK! Also, I now have gorgeous and aromatic peppermint growing on my porch. Me: 1 Wasps: 0 P.S. Mint in general is super invasive and will take over any other plants it shares soil with. It has to be planted in a pot to avoid spreading like wildfire.

Being able to grow your own food for free is just the craziest concept. I also have some doomsday prepper DNA in me and gardening satisfies that need for self-sufficiency lmao. My girlfriend’s mom told me recently that plants have survival instincts too, so when you grow your own fruits and vegetables, they try to adapt to what you like so you’re less likely to get rid of them. So also that’s why food you grow yourself tastes so much better.

I’m watching it be fleshed out in real time, seeing every kind of mishap or glitch. I love it, it’s changing with me.
