I have AuDHD and spend 80% of my waking moments ruminating, processing, overthinking etc. When it gets especially intense I find myself stuck in Freezes that last hours, days, weeks. I've found that getting out a blank piece of paper (it cant be within a journal/notebook for some reason) and writing down everything on my mind - from to-do lists, things I want to buy, outfits I want to try, routines I'm trying to figure out, and/or interpersonal dilemmas - leaves me feeling so much lighter. I also get clarity around questions I'm mulling over. I had an especially illuminating Brain Dumping session yesterday and I feel like someone just took a swiffer duster and cleaned every nook and cranny of my brain. Or a system reboot. Also - I suggest trashing the brain dumps after a certain time and not try to turn it into a rolling to-do list. If you don't act on something within a few weeks, and you're still not thinking about it, it likely wasn't that important, and your brain will thank you for decluttering.

brain dumps are like to-do lists but for the adhd-er who’s always got ten million things on their mind. so i get a piece of paper, sticky note, or open up a new page in my notebook and spill out all the tasks that are weighing down my mind in that moment. everything from the tiny, mundane tasks to the big, twenty step projects. this allows me to just get it out on paper and not have it torment me any longer, and you’ll feel this weight off your shoulders once you see all your scary tasks written out. now that’s the big brain dump part where you throw up everything in your mind without caring about priorities or importance. now, get out a new sheet of paper, and start sorting out those tasks from most important/most urgent and least important/least urgent. you can number the tasks or sort them into boxes, whatever works with you visually. your big scary projects will be at the top of the list, such as “update my resume” or “write essay due next week,” and your smaller tasks like “take out the trash” and “organize bookshelf” will be at the bottom. my adhd self would still be a bit intimidated by this, however, let’s do the small tasks first to get the momentum rolling! so i’ll go to my kitchen and wrap up the jenga tower of trash, then neaten up a few books on my bookshelf. the aim is to *get it out of the way* and make progress over perfection! ok i realize how LONG this is, but hopefully this method builds up momentum to get started on larger tasks and make you feel accomplished that you did something small, and that counts! :)

Especially in the morning, defaulting to cleaning up and decluttering messes is great when you can't think straight about what you're doing in your day. It gets your body moving, and when you can finally get ahold of your thoughts, you've already made space for what you actually want to be doing.

Tackle, push, throw away. Process, compartmentalize, recycle. Congrats. I am at the point now where it’s less than a second to destroy the bad thought and process. Brains are cool. No easy task! But you can do it! P.S. cold water and breathing patterns! Warm showers and comfort things/foods!

I have been making more efforts to explore references without meddling of algorithms. Goodbye Pinterest. Goodbye endless "recommended for you" scrolling. I booked an appointment at the archive library of this Japanese streetwear brand called Vowels in NYC. The creative director has over 2000 fashion, culture, photography, and design related magazines and books that spanned over 4 decades. I was able to choose books out of the 200 or so that were out in the store, and they had scanners. I had the time of my life. I felt like a researcher, a real curator. This is small first step in rebuilding my critical eye & references free from digital interference.

I blinked and made a short film? My friend recently started an artist collective, and one of the flagship activities involves hosting parties with queer and femme DJs and/or musical talent. I take the theme and then create something to go alongside the party. This party was called Spring Fling and is about rebirths and awakenings. I reached out to friends to help me create a non-linear short film that tells the "Awakening" stories of 4 women. Pseudo-interview style, and improvised/"real" stories. We posted initial cut, and I couldn't be more thankful for the opportunity to make art with and for my friends!

I love salons. I love intentional spaces for artists, writers, thinkers, clowns, performers yappers, educators, etc. etc. can convene to share ideas, just because. Recently went to a salon called Salon 4J. Its not exactly a "public" salon, but I love that it has "branding" so to speak. This was an "After Dark" edition, so the topics were pretty spicy. History of "Horny Cinema", dance floor make-outs, yoni massages and a short story involving a queer woman living with the ghost of an actress from an iconic yiddish film were the topics du jour. All hosted in an apartment, very intimate, with artwork done by the host's badass grandma. Cutest snacks. What I love about salons is that they're not exclusive, and anyone can come if you have know someone and have a partiful link. If you host a salon please invite me.
