a very very hot take i know the only reasoning i ever hear from people are “it’s nostalgic and comforting” and i get that bc i also loved them so much growing up (esp during difficult moments) but there’s plenty of other things i read/ watched in my childhood that weren’t written by an ignorant woman who just funded a huge anti-trans charity… i used to feel differently but i think at this point it’s not even that justifiable to pirate it either. what i don’t understand is that i feel some people act like it was the only book/film series they had as a child when surely we all have other nostalgic things, and there’s plenty of other fantasy books/ movies out there anyway. overall i just think the author has and continues to cause so much harm to the trans community that i personally don’t understand how anyone can consume harry potter stuff without feeling uncomfortable about it, or why people are so resistant to finding something better to replace it with

Even completely ignoring the transphobia of the author, it's concerning to see an entire generation of people cling to the taste of their adolescence. Why can't people grow and challenge themselves? How does it not get boring after twenty years? Is our world seriously so awful that people feel the need to desperately hold onto the media they consumed before they had to pay bills?

@_KZR_ i put in my other comment, i honestly don’t think it’s necessarily bad to re-watch / re-read childhood stuff but to me it requires the thinking level of a beach read or fluffy rom com movie. i really don’t think it should ever be the only thing someone is reading/ watching - we all need to be consuming media of substance, too, especially books written for adults that require more critical thinking!

What kills me is one of the cast members was at an interview and said something along the lines of “I’m concerned about HP fans… they should be over it by now”😭

as someone who was deep in the hp trenches (up until the age of 15. a kid and even i had grown out of it!) i wholeheartedly agree. even outside of rowling’s internet shenanigans…i believe there’s sometimes ways to separate art from the artist in some contexts. however her biases color her work violently. like ok sure let’s make fun of the girl who literally gets called the wizard n-word (also why is there a slur like that in-universe in the first place!!) for being mad at in-universe slavery, rita skeeter being a clear indicator of her transphobia, the goblins at the bank…her weird morals cannot be separated from her work. also u just look stupid calling yourself a hufflepuff at age 36

aside from JK Rowlings virulent gender essentialism and obsessive transphobia, its like still being obsessed with Artemis Fowl or Eragon.... they're fucking childrens books. move on, grow up. it's like being in your twenties and listening to hannah montana, but if miley cyrus turned out to be evil.

@FOREST right like i’m all for whimsy and childhood nostalgia whatever so i have nothing against re-reading stuff for fun but people need to use their critical thinking skills more… to me it’s like - if you’re so desperate to read fantasy then why not check out Le Guin’s Earthsea or something else that’s better than HP?!

I ve seen all the movies so I know what’s gonna happen. But why does it hit different and harder in the books!?!?! Im a grown ass adult and STILL am shocked At these plot twists and social commentary! Plus everytime I carry one of these books I’m reading, I always get a wonderful comment from a stranger. Which is fun

i know jk rowling suxxxxx and i was never a harry potter kid but the cormoran strike murder mystery series she writes under the name robert galbraith is the dumbest funnest most satisfying type of trash read for me and im re-reading them because im in a sad place mentally and i am comforted by the fantasy of likeable people solving crimes and getting justice.

being traditionally cool is really quite boring and iterative, and it’s actually very cool and sexy to geek out about something you like or share bits of knowledge on a topic you’re passionate about

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WORKER’S DAY!!!! i love having a union, i love being a union steward and getting to support my unit. when my union won its contract, i got a pay bump, better benefits, and increased protection as a worker. 🥳 unions help address racial and gender pay gaps, issues workplaces impose on families and those having kids, addressing unsafe conditions, plus things like better health insurance, wages and overtime, weingarten rights to representation, and more!!! if you don’t have a union but are thinking about forming one, check out AFL-CIO’s page (linked) or Emergency Workplace Organizing Committee. there’s always more power in a union!! ✊🥖🌹
