The pregnancy of Adriana Smith, a Black woman from theĀ U.S. StateĀ ofĀ Georgia, is the focus of an ongoingĀ medical ethicsĀ controversy which began in February 2025. Smith was declaredĀ brain deadĀ after a medical emergency. Because she was 9 weeks pregnant, she was subsequently kept onĀ life supportĀ to allow sufficientĀ fetal developmentfor delivery, without giving the family a choice in the matter. According to the family,Ā the hospitalĀ stated that keeping Smith on life support was required under theĀ state's abortion lawĀ becauseĀ fetal cardiac activityĀ had been detected.
This is an actual nightmare. It's so evil to have her family go through this just so she can have a baby we don't even know she wanted in the first place š
