I switched from spotify almost a year ago- it felt weird at first but I couldn't imagine going back. I buy myself 1 cd a month off bandcamp like a little treat- costs the same as a monthly spotify subscription AND now you get to own the physical media AND the original high quality wav files that the artist uploaded themselves. Spotify, Apple, and yt cut sound quality significantly and listening to the same albums on bandcamp feels like hearing it all for the first time. Also the artists actually get the money you pay, bandcamp only takes a very small portion. Ik not all artists are on bandcamp tho, so for that I'll go onto YouTube with an adblocker. Now i have a great cd collection and I never worry about ads

i know i know bandcamp is evil whatever. something about this just feels right. the clean interface. memories of youth. the scrobbles w my scrobbling app are more consistent than spotify's godawful built in scrobbler too. i love giving money to people when i can.

i refused to use streaming services at all for a long time because i wanted a sense of ownership over my music library (even if in a nebulous digital kinda way) & i would say itโ€™s great for so many reasons , itโ€™s slightly more inconvenient but itโ€™s honestly pretty easy to just download music from bandcamp/rip from cds/torrenting sites & manually put it into your phone from itunes. you get to think a bit more about what youโ€™re putting in your library (or from your library into your phone) but you also get to hold onto things in a certain version & protect your archive from the whims of streaming services & copyright claims .

Tidal's services cost less, audio quality is superior, pays artists better; has an algorithm that does not filter people to the top grossing artists in their listening genre and is all around excellent, the app is trimmed down, it provides a weekly analysis of your listening (so a more frequent and representative breakdown). Fuck spotify, and if you're not ready to move to a bandcamp only purchase/download + MP3 situations then Tidal is your one. I'm sure this is not a new take, but I will say I am over the moon about the switch so far.

use the scroll time to instead educate yourself on the billionaires making money off of your life and attention with these apps (i.e. how much money they make per minute/post, how algorithms are made like slot machines, subliminal targeted ads between posts, etc.) and you will find yourself naturally disgusted/enraged every time you open those apps instead of ashamed/frustrated. it's difficult to pull yourself out of a scroll, but the more you practice, the easier it can become. highly recommend the yt vid that hazelisonline made on this!! good luck ๐Ÿป
