I usually make playlists of my favorite tracks released each year. I also have playlists of favorites in a certain genre, and a few playlists that are a certain mood like “driving at night”

I make playlists every month or every season, depending on my mood. It’s nice to go back and listen to stuff I was into my freshmen year of college, or during the pandemic. I add songs to the playlist that my friends send me or I hear in movies or tv shows, along with songs I just love and want to be hearing. Like a little time capsule

I have been making monthly playlists for the past 4 and a half years, I do not skip months. They have been the most consistent tracking of my life over this time. There are a few rules, no full albums can be added and no songs can be repeated from past playlists. They range from 10 to 30 songs. I can tell how I was doing based on the number of songs and how congealed the musical narrative is. At this point they are habit, I make them to listen to during each month but I also make them to look back on. Producing a nostalgia for each month of each year. There are no overarching themes and these playlists decentralize my music taste, the yearly review lacks month to month consistency.

i started in 2018, but every year i make a playlist a month and any new song i like (or rediscover after forgetting) i add to the month’s playlist as someone who loses track of time and can’t keep track of what happened in what year because it all blends for me, it’s a little funny looking back at what music i was listening to during certain events of my life, like breakups and how people i met influenced my music taste. i.e. march of 2018 when i got into lofi and i met a community of small artists who have grown since then or july of 2021 when i got into hyperpop after meeting an ex-roommate. i wish i started this earlier like in june 2015 when i got into kpop everyone i know puts every song they like into one playlist, or their “liked songs” but i love having my songs organized into playlists and folders and one of my favorite things to do is find a theme for the playlist covers :p

Log off Amazon prime and step into the real world. Go to a local physical store in your community. Look your neighbor in the eye and put money in their hand. Go to a local venue and hear what musicians in your community are creating. Talk to them about it afterwards. Buy a T-shirt or cd or whatever they’re selling, they’ll make more money from that than from thousands of streams. Seriously, Spotify pays a fraction of a penny per stream. Forget about Starbucks. Check out a local coffee shop instead. Learn your barista’s name and tip them. Go to your local book store and library. Look around and see what book covers catch your eye. Ask employees for recommendations instead of just reading whatever’s trending on #booktok.  Go to your local museums, farmers market, theaters, restaurants, whatever your community has going on. When you go local, you see your community in a new way. You make friends and feel more connected to the people around you. You will discover new things organically instead of relying on an algorithm. You keep your money circulating in your community instead of making billionaires richer. You will have a greater appreciation for where you live. P.S. Pay In Cash
