I read this Aeon essay called “Homo Crustaceous” that discussed a study of different lineages of crabs that all eventually evolved into the crab, which sparked internet memes. The article makes a pretty good argument that crabs are more similar to humans than we believe. https://aeon.co/essays/are-humans-destined-to-evolve-into-crabs

theyre weird and beautiful and smart and change colour. I loved them anyway and then I read Other Minds: The Octopus and the Evolution of Intelligent Life and I loved them even more, as well as other intelligent cephalopods like colour changing cuttle fish. Learning about how they change colour, essentially evolving two different types of biological pixels in their skin, is unbelievable. It doesn’t sound real, its like real life magic.

found this cracking applet that lets you zoom in on all the arms of the evolution tree/fork. they've mapped the splits to look like leaves on the arms of a tree, but the real big boy behind it all is that the evolution tree takes the shape of a branching fractal. (guys let me tell you bifurcation is a wonderful thing.) it also lets you map the pathways from our different common ancestors to living species now, and you can get a really good visual understanding of the evolutionary distance between us and other animals or bacteria. once again happy travels
