i just watched this tonight. i screened it for silk movie night on discord and it was everything i had hoped it to be. peak summer vibes paired with friendship & heartbreak, being at lifeās mercy with all itās unexpected turns. go check it out, you wonāt regret it.
desire, friendship, betrayal and lust. but also love, and time and sociopolitical crises seen through naive lenses. beautiful scenes and one of the best soundtracks!! have you seen it?
my favorite movie of all time, itās the story of two boys who think theyāre men searching for a beach that doesnāt exist to impress a woman whoās searching for something too, both a coming of age movie and a critique of mexican society, class and male friendships
now that this is streaming on netflix i could finally show it to my partner after having raved about it for years and years now. one of my all time favourites, and one of the sexiest and most biting films of all time. set in Mexico, it centres two young men, one of whom is the son of (corrupt) government official, salivating desperately over an older woman who impulsively agrees to go on road trip with them to a beach they've made up when her life starts falling apart. it seamlessly juxtaposes their trivial concerns and petty arguments, with the working class and Indigenous peoples of Mexico. it digs into class and sexual politics, and heteronormativity, whilst somehow remaining incredibly entertaining and super erotic. also shout out to baby Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal.
iāve been humming this song and thinking about it all day for some reason. itās about her traveling the world, going to all these different countries, but still missing home. while joni isnāt a native californian (sheās canadian) i hear her love and longing for it in this song. her voice is just so delicate yet so powerful at the same and when she hits those runs with the high notes it tickles my brain. i donāt know how she does it man. the lyrics are great as well too, one of the best songwriters to ever live. this song makes me love my home even more than i already do. even when i lived in texas for a few years i would wish a tornado would come and tear down the trailer park i lived in during tornado season in the summer, literally kneeling on the ground inside of the neighborhood shelter with my palms together, eyes closed, praying to god to let mother nature do its thing so i could go back home to california. obviously, joni and i were in 2 very different situationsā¦
this movie is amazing. i love how they kept the original dialogue of the play and used it in the movies but still modernized the setting and characters. a lot of movies make romeo and juliet bland and boring but this one is vibrant, with fun wardrobes, religious iconography everywhere, and this movie feels so saturated. leonardo dicaprio is charming as always in this movie and he plays an amazing romeo to pair with precious juliet. i absolutely love the person who plays mercutio, they did an AMAZING job. the problem with all the other romeo and juliet movies is that they always take themselves too seriously but you have to remember, this was meant for stage theatre and shakespeare was a playwright who loved to be humorous. all of that gets lost in every single other romeo and juliet movie except this one. itās so fun, i highly recommend. CAUTION: tears might be shed.
