Jeffrey lewis has a way of making optimism seem actually practical. Hearing him for the first time.. it just clicked immediately. Iām eternally grateful for him, his mind, his comics, and for this song. Once, during a particularly rough shift, I played āLifeā maybe about 15 times on repeat. I didnāt even mean to, nor did I have it queued, I just kept hitting the button on my headphones to manually replay it each time I got to the end. I just HAD to hear it again and I soaked in those lyrics every single time around. āLife is a story, don't you doubt
Bad times give ya something to talk about
The next time you think youre all worn out,
Remember life is a story,
Dontcha doubt..
It only takes a day for everything to turn aroundā
Iāve recently become obsessed with finding songs that fit into this category, which Iāll explain: these are songs that are anthemic singalong songs, but different than an anthemic pop song. These songs are usually dense and layered production-wise, tell a story, and are more lyrical than a standard pop song. The sentiment of these songs are bigger and more sprawling than a typical songās subject matter. When I brought this up on the pod, KJ came up with the term āraconteur anthems,ā and someone else said I was referring to āwe anthemsā instead of āI songs,ā and I think thatās the perfect way to describe it. I think that when this type of song is done perfectly, it probably makes for the best music ever written.Ā āLike A Rolling Stoneā is the archetype of this type of song. Other main examples include āCommon Peopleā by Pulp, āAll My Friendsā by LCD Soundsystem, āBorn In The USAā by Bruce Springsteen, āHeroesā by David Bowie, āAmerican Pieā by Don McLean, and this list goes on. A song is probably the most accessible art form there is, and achieving this level of universality in something that short and contained is an amazing feat, and Iāve gotten really obsessed with trying to figure out which songs fit the bill.
Another one of Maddie's fav songs!!! I'm not sure how I found this song, probs through spotify algorithm or something ... butt this song is amazinggg the keys and layering so good.... i love when I show someone a song and they fall in love with it too! showed this to my partner at the time and it became one of his favs too... i love sharing music!!! this entire album is really good I highly recommend! š On our picture shelves
(Get on, or get out)
Statues mocking me
How am I supposed to feel?
How am I not put at ease?
Talk yourself to sleep
Fall into it deep
I will wash off mine with rolling waves of worry
It doesn't have to feel so wrong
Bethany you're riding this one to its grave (the gates)
You never understood the difference between someone's beating and refusal to trade
Bless these tangled veins
(Get on, or get out)
None of which will grow the same
Now am I supposed to fake it?
Now are you so poised, at ease?
Think long, think, think long, think think
Can you feel it surround me?
I think it'll drown me
And I wonder how you could say that we (you) really owe you (us) anything
Think long, think, think long, think think
