if you haven't seen Jeff Hiller in Somebody Somewhere (also a rec i need to write), you may know him from a bunch of random bit parts. i listened to his interview recently on the Sam Sanders Show and i'm halfway through his hilarious and sincere memoir (loving the audiobook, which he reads). as a true believer growing up as a Southern Baptist missionary kid and now a leftist late-blooming queer, it's hard to express how specifically i relate to his life story. he even went to a small private Christian college in Texas (i went to a different one but it's a ~unique~ experience lmao). it's also super refreshing to hear from an unconventional actor who took a LONG time to finally reach some level of success, not to mention baseline career stability (health insurance!) anyway, would love to meet him and kiki about niche Christian culture one day.
A few years ago I got into background acting as a hobby/"side hustle". I am in a few episodes of HBO's The Deuce as "Lower East Side type" and in the High Fidelity reboot with Zoe Kravitz as "concert goer", among other less notable roles. It is a pretty fun way to spend a Saturday as long as you're patient and aren't expecting to ~make it big~.
They bring you in for a fitting and then day-of you and all the other extras are herded around like cattle and yelled at to stand certain places at certain times. Other than that you're sitting in a chair reading a book or talking to the other extras. I made something like $160 an episode back in like 2018- not much but decent if you feel like getting paid to stand on a street corner in a funny outfit which is something I might do for free anyway. My biggest let-down in this era was getting asked to potentially be Jared Leto's stand-in in that vampire movie he was in. They were gonna pay me $500 a day to stand on an X while Mr. Jared was in his trailer. Sigh...
Look can be milfs, dilfs, whatever, I’m not picky All I ask is that we play characters with the following dynamic: they help me learn my new magical powers that I’ll use to save our kingdom; they‘re the weary con artist that teaches me how to survive the seedy crime underworld I’m investigating as a young but scrappy PI (private investigator not perfectly imperfector); they‘re a writer, director, filmmaker, etc. who‘s blocked artistically and I am the muse that re-inspires them (eventually realizing I don’t need them and can make my own work); etc. I don’t believe this is asking too much! just aspiring to be the talia Ryder to someone’s Sean price Williams, the ivy wolk to Sean baker (why are they all named Sean), the Greta to noah baumbach (ok not all named Sean but mostly)
after five years of grad school and subsequent job search, i can finally say i have successfully changed careers 😭 i start my new job counseling kids at a community mental health clinic on Monday. yesterday was my last shift at the grocery store that was an escape from my horrible corporate job and a sustaining force throughout grad school. it’s so bittersweet to leave the sweetest coworkers i’ve ever had and the most fun i’ve had at work. it’s immeasurably healing to quit a job for only good reasons. my coworkers got me a cake, everyone wrote notes in a card, and the goodbyes throughout the day made my heart swell. i even got to tell the good news to my favorite instacarter 🥺 after i clocked out for the last time, my friends joined me for gelato at the cafe and we strolled the store for a final time, this time as simply a loyal customer.
