i’ve been wanting to listen to this song in the mornings for these past couple of days. the runaways was the first teenage, all female rock band in the 70s. they paved the way for riot grrrls in the 90s and women rockers today. if you look at amy from amy l and the sniffers you can see she has a similar look to cherie curie from the runaways. this is also the band where joan jett got her start, before she became joan jett and the blackhearts! some members from the blackhearts were in the runaways i think. the movie is pretty good too and they had joan’s opinion while they were making it. it’s on netflix and i highly recommend checking it out as well as their music. they have some bangers that aren’t cherry bomb, take advantage!
A woman tells her story about growing up, listening to music, playing music, going through adolescent tough times. And then she talks back to her younger self, telling her things she wished that young rocker had known back then. It’s an interesting format and a moving way to tell her story! There also are standalone episodes from LG of Thelma & the Sleaze and Mia Berrin of Pom Pom Squad that are beautiful.
i feel like trashy synth music has made a huge comeback due to the economic state of our country and i’m just truly here for it. “i know a girl… and yeah she’d rock ur world. modern day joan of arc!”
my step dad recommended joan armatrading the other week so I listened to her essentials playlist on apple music and came across thsi song
it’s really good and kind of like subtly 80s
i think it’s kind of jazzy/pop/rock but don’t take my word for it
DO take my word that it’s good tho
i’ve been humming this song and thinking about it all day for some reason. it’s about her traveling the world, going to all these different countries, but still missing home. while joni isn’t a native californian (she’s canadian) i hear her love and longing for it in this song. her voice is just so delicate yet so powerful at the same and when she hits those runs with the high notes it tickles my brain. i don’t know how she does it man. the lyrics are great as well too, one of the best songwriters to ever live. this song makes me love my home even more than i already do. even when i lived in texas for a few years i would wish a tornado would come and tear down the trailer park i lived in during tornado season in the summer, literally kneeling on the ground inside of the neighborhood shelter with my palms together, eyes closed, praying to god to let mother nature do its thing so i could go back home to california. obviously, joni and i were in 2 very different situations…
this movie is amazing. i love how they kept the original dialogue of the play and used it in the movies but still modernized the setting and characters. a lot of movies make romeo and juliet bland and boring but this one is vibrant, with fun wardrobes, religious iconography everywhere, and this movie feels so saturated. leonardo dicaprio is charming as always in this movie and he plays an amazing romeo to pair with precious juliet. i absolutely love the person who plays mercutio, they did an AMAZING job. the problem with all the other romeo and juliet movies is that they always take themselves too seriously but you have to remember, this was meant for stage theatre and shakespeare was a playwright who loved to be humorous. all of that gets lost in every single other romeo and juliet movie except this one. it’s so fun, i highly recommend. CAUTION: tears might be shed.
