When I draw or paint something and I don't feel 100% happy with the end product, sometimes I like to use it in a collage or do a collage around it.
It turns art I'm disappointed in into something I like looking at. It keeps me from getting disheartened and helps creative juices flow.
I think the collaging aspect is especially useful because it less technical and you can be pretty abstract with composition.
It's a lot of fun and I think everyone should try it!! Here's a picture of one I did today. My drawing came out at a little flat and lacking dimension. I turned it into a collage and I feel like my original vision started to show. I started creating a story for this character I made through the collage.

Every time I enter into some kind of emotional spiral (good or bad, lol!) I make one of these. Or when I want to organize my thoughts around a creative project, or just for ~funsies~ (๐คฎ)
I love collaging but I donโt always have the resources or energy to make a physical one and once you get the hang of it, this is a super easy way to do it!!

๐I was reading Cheryl Strayed's introduction to the 2013 edition of "The Best American Essays" and I came upon this passage which really seems to have completely transmogrified my brain along with my perception of essay writing:
"The word essay means 'to try', 'to attempt', 'to test'... Behind every good essay there's an author with a savage desire to know more about what is already known. A good essay isn't a report of what happened. It's a search for the stuff beyond and beneath." It's a really beautiful approach to essay writing and I think writing and art in general. The point is not mechanical precision but discovery: to "try", "attempt", "test" in search for the essence of things, their obscured layers. I don't know, I just find this perspective SO liberating!! :))
