Fold the top corner of the page down! I tend to lose/ destroy paper bookmarks, so to keep my spot (and overcome the fear of damaging personal property), I do that little fold and not worry about it!
(alternate rec: Not necessarily "in a pinch", but I got a tin of bookdarts for free a while back, and I love using those too! Keep the tin in your bag and you'll never be without one!)
