the CEO of spotify is in the headlines this month for investing in AI military tech, so it seems to me that the streaming companies are a much bigger ethical problem than cancelled artists. personally i think the best thing to do is just directly support the artists you do feel good about supporting whenever you can afford to support them. we all consume far too much media to be able to pay for everything. but the way i see it, even if you pirate 99% of what you consume, if you cancel one sub and buy an album with that money you're already netting some positive karma. if you don't feel good about supporting someone then i think it's fine not to. part of being an artist is accepting that your career is going to be somewhat predicated on social currency.
I think you need to treat it the same way as you would a "normal" controversial artist. If you think what they did is horrendous but still want to listen to their stuff you can listen to re uploads from other people, so you dont support them directly.
I really dont know about spiritual, though.
Some say seperate the artist from the art, but i dont believe in that, really...
Don't listen in a way that will give them money if they are actively hurting people. Horrible people make great art all the time so you are far from the only one in this position.
i feel like it’s this constant debate but the thing is? there’s millions of artists/musicians/etc out there, so i find when you want to hold on so tightly to someone, you’re closing yourself off from other artists that could be similar or way cooler but not a terrible person
obviously there’s a distinction between a faux pas, mistakes before growth, or being deeply consistently horrible, but i absolutely think that’s a distinction worth making…
we only have so much time on this earth, and our time to consume art and music and film and literature is fleeting, so i’d rather spend it on the works of people who have earnestly made the world a more beautiful place and exploring art to find those !
without knowing how far you are in your recording journey it can be a little hard to make a good rec, but a universal one is to try some new plugins! lately i'm really enjoying lair and tectonic by aberrant dsp. sometimes when i get bored with my own guitar playing i'll set one of those up and the simplest idea starts to sound special.
also hey! i'm always looking for new music friends too. i've got a bandcamp on my profile with some odds and ends. if you ever wanna talk recording or just want some drum tracks for a demo or something feel free to message!
