Between socializing, traveling, working, and just dealing with life… we drain our wells. It’s imperative to refill it. For me, if I am on a big creative output, like working on an album, touring, etc… it’s really important to go to live shows, an exhibition, something to refill that creative hole I’ve expended. If I have a big week of socializing, it means spending a day in bed and not looking at my phone or socializing with anyone…losing myself in a book or binging an entire series behind my duvet.

taking the time to make space for yourself and do activities that fill your soul are wonderful ways to recharge, but their very purpose is defeated if you’re too burnt out to even enjoy them. so take a beat and rest, like really get some good sleep, put the phone away and let your brain unload for a bit.

This is a “recommendation” to myself. I’ve written about the constant eb and flow of my hermit-mode tendencies on this newsletter before, but it’s gotten much worse over the years as my workaholic personality tends to leave me feeling burnt out and distant both physically and mentally. I need to be there— for my partner, my family, and my friends —but also to see more of the world and enjoy the city I live in. The hours at home coding PI.FYI, or fixating on how to make this newsletter my career without destroying what makes it special, are leading to a bit of a missing the golden years feeling and I need to get out of my own head. I’m going to make a conscious effort to reach out more, make it out to friend’s shows, simply grab a beer with a friend, and just generally be there.

I’ve learned that returning from a trip on a Sunday night and then going right back to work is often not worth it. My sweet spot is to come back on a Friday and then have a weekend at home to chill and do life chores before resuming work. Ideal if you can also book some low key fun and/or relaxing activities when you’re back. A massage, an off-the-beaten track restaurant, a long walk. Preserve the exploratory, vacation mood so you’re not just doing chores. Huge sub rec: When I go on a vacation vacation (time off from work, not just changing location), I always like to take a digital detox. I find that doing that resets my brain and helps me return to reality with a much healthier relationship to my phone and modern life busy work like processing emails. In an ideal world, I keep the phone off for a couple days post the travel (or at least don’t respond yet to missed messages). It helps taper the transition and make it less like “oh fuck that wasn’t my life and now I have to do my dumb lil job and catch up on my digital correspondence.”

Life gets incredibly busy and hectic… taking a moment to ground yourself is important. Someone once told me if you lie on your back with your knees bent for 10 minutes, it realigns your spine… but I find it realigns my brain as well. I don’t have the focus, dedication, or patience to meditate, so I do this instead.  If you're able to find a patch of moss, it just brings it to the next level.  Don’t question it, just try.

NEVER FORGET EXERCISE IS IMPORTANT KIDS. Pop that pill or that pussy, share a journey with your best friend, discover new horizons. The dancefloor can transport and transform you. Be bold, be reborn, and spread the love. Just keep it positive.

I really enjoy cooking for people I love, and throwing a dinner party that runs late.  A good playlist is key, but if you really want to set a tone, I highly suggest projecting a film (without the audio) to sync with it.  My personal favorite is “Le Planet Sauvage.”
