Birthdays are a time for self reflection and often, for me, that means regression. Last year I clocked my mid-30s milestone by treating myself to a slightly metallic powder blue eyeshadow by Neen in a shade aptly named āScreamā From C.O. Bigelow. Think Buffalo 66, PJ Harvey, Euphoria. Much like my teen years, no one takes blue eyeshadow seriously, but at the same time is very intimidated by it. For a more camp look I go with Claropyscheās āLife on Marsā shade mixed with Make Up foreverās Aqua Seal that reads Divine/Ursula/Love Witch when I really want to play the villain.
I have been a powder blue eyeshadow advocate since 2019 or 2020. It all started when I bought a stila periwinkle eyeshadow tube. Since then, I have sought new shades of such a blue. Powder blue eyeshadow just really says āI am from a movie from 1999 and I am smarter than you.ā I love it. Every lip you pair with blue eyeshadow is shocking, striking, bold and jarring. Itās absolutely the most fashion thing I could think of besides a nice taupe.
This goes against the grain of my anxiety riddled brain, but if you find yourself in a bout of unemployment I encourage you to lean in. From what I read, this very platform would not exist were it not for unemployment. Granted I know this perspective sounds like and is a privileged take, but just know I have no idea where next monthās rent is coming from. I find that the psychic terror of not making money creeps in when Iām most idle, so I try to do one or more of these things a day to keep that feeling at bay: - Walk my dog
- Go to a museum
- Research for creative projects
- Make said creative projects
- Call a friend
- Go to the gym
- Read a book or long form journalism
- Cook
- Clean my house Eventually I know that the capitalist grind will rear its ugly head, as it always does, but for a brief moment in time itās nice to just shut the door on its face.
Most New Yorkers loathe midtown, but Iām not one of them. Name another neighborhood where you can find the cityās most iconic institutions (Keens, Grand Central Oyster Bar, NYPL), specialty material stores (B&H Fabric, Toho, Jamali), great baked goods (Culture, Rose Bakery, Cafe DāAvignon) Japanese grocery stores (Dainobu, Katagiri), all your doctorās offices, restaurants that stand up to their hype (Sugarfish, Lodi) and your corporate basics (Uniqlo, Muji)? Excuse meā¦Iām waiting. What I love most about midtown is that itās an area for getting shit done. No lollygaggers allowed!
- For when you need a buffer between you and the world.
- Like wearing a very thin turtleneck and pulling it over half your face.
- The lazy girls version of meditation
