The first four films in the series are a collection of all-time great directors making sick, totally unique-from-each-other action films and the last three (soon to be four) are Chris McQuarrie going bananas with unlimited money, creative freedom, and a leading man who’ll do anything for the bit. Say what you will about Tom Cruise, but that dude LOVES making movies and 99% of the time they’re phenomenal

no director does it like him. he edits and does cinematography for all of his movies under aliases. he shot a psychological thriller on an iphone 6. he made a black and white silent edit of raiders of the lost ark and got trent reznor and atticus ross to write the score for it. he got daniel craig to showcase his comedic chops in a southern accent two years before knives out. his new movie premiered at sundance the other night and it’s a horror movie shot from the pov of a ghost??? i have so much respect for soderbergh just doing stuff he thinks is cool without being worried about being an auteur

Ocean’s 11, obviously the essential heist film of the 21st century, but Ocean’s 12 poses the question of doing away with what we expect from someone who already nearly perfected the genre but gave him a hundred million dollars to do insane auteur stuff, there’s some camerawork in Twelve that leaves me in awe even to this day, it’s a remarkably dense film

My favorite chrisnol movie is Interstellar & Stephanie's is The Prestige. He just knows what he's doing and the fact that his wife produces his films is hopefully a good sign we can trust the guy

A master at writing genre fiction as literary fiction. Multiple narratives, stellar characters, a time-hopping, pre- and post-apocalyptic plot, and a killer miniseries adaptation to watch once you’re finished

I only saw her perform twice, but I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone else live more than once (though I obviously would like to see a lot of them live again). At least I can say one of the times I saw her was her very first US performance 🥹💔
