I'd hesitate to recommend this, because it can sound callous and glib. But it was suggested to me awhile back by a homeless friend—a guy who has lived most of his adult years as an alcoholic, spent decades on the streets, experiences pain in his body every single day, was repeatedly abused as a child.
He offered it as a way to reorient himself when he just wants to end it all.
It's a practice that I do often now too. Actually I need to do it today right now before I do anything else.
Writing a list of things we're thankful for doesn't change anything or deliver us from abuse or toxicity, but it can help us see clearly. In the process of making that list, the next good healthy step may reveal itself.
