such a good translation. it's modern but not in a gauche way, and Wilson's is the first version I've read that makes it really feel alive, accessible and yet still ancient. You can feel how much love she has for this awful tragic narrative which makes her such a good guide through the story

Emily wilson

I prefer Emily Wilson’s Odyssey and it was the edition I taught from when I taught the Odyssey for a university class— her language is accessible/readable and very intentional, and I think she approaches classics through a womanist lens that really makes her edition stand out. But it depends on what you’re looking for; some author prioritize maintaining style/form in translation, others are literal, and it depends on what you prefer to read.

My friend’s odyssey translation advice:

He was a classics major and has read it both in Ancient Greek and English. He told me: “Good question haha. Depends on what you want, Fagles translates it pretty literally but still makes it readable. Fitzgerald has a good translation but he takes a lot of liberties to make it very readable in English. I like Robert Fagles”
