The absolute peak of late 90s math rock and early 2000s dance punk. Strange, funny, and eminently danceable. Tracks to start with: Tonight We Mean It, Back and Forth, Following Through.
You’re gonna jump if AG (and Finn Keane) made it. This album came out after everyone had already published their “best of 2023” and is therefore criminally overlooked. Although Soft Rock is wide-ranging in genre (from the guitar-driven rock of Sentence to the neo-medieval lament O Fortuna), emotion (from the proto-brat Heavy to the heartbreaking Lost Everything), and theme (love, friendship, myth, the music industry), it comes together into a remarkably cohesive and fully skipless jewel box of an album.
Being comfortable is nice when it’s a reward but as a state of being it’s boring and makes you boring and a boring life is a waste of whatever this is supposed to be. Go be uncomfortable (me talking to me)
1. Don’t go to sleep until at least an hour after you stopped drinking
2. Chug like a litre of water with liquid IV
3. Pee like twice before you pass out
4. Wake up kinda early and chug a liquid IV water again
5. Eat a sausage egg and cheese sandwich (replace where dietary restrictions apply)
6. Take a cozy nap for an hour before noon
A wordless semi-doc about the evolution of the world through the lens of industrial “progress” scored brilliantly to Phillip Glass being as glass-ian as possible. So. Good.
