i come back and watch this film at least once a year… i love to use Frances Ha to introduce my friends and family to ā€œarthouseā€ films. it’s witty, relatable, and leaves a lot of room for personal introspection as we age and how life gets in the way of our closest relationships. also who doesn’t love greta gerwig literally just being her charming self on screen!

Petit Maman is maybe my favourite film about girlhood; it’s spare and soft and ruminative. Miyazaki movies are also often centered on girlhood, and feminine adolescence— Kiki’s delivery service, and the Secret World of Arriety, are two that I would recommend. Extended (nonexhaustive) list: Catharine Called Birdy, Dirty Dancing, Turning Red, The Quiet Girl, Eighth Grade, Frances Ha.

my therapist told me the only ā€œtrueā€ form of unconditional love is that of a mother and her infant- beyond this, unconditional love doesn’t exist. love is messy. embrace love that is platonic, intuitive, intentional, or even fleeting.
