I really want to start spending less time on my phone because it's incredibly distracting in my life. I want to be more social and focus on my art and language learning journey. I'm learning Portuguese, and I've set a goal for myself to be conversational by the end of the year. Also, I want to start making clothes and designs more for things!
1. Read at least 1 book a month
2. Turn my phone off at night and for at least one day a week have my phone turned off all day
3. Establish a firm daily studio routine
4. No new clothes all year
i have been on a journey to untangle my tasks from my iPhone. i'd be out in the world someplace, pull out my phone for something as menial as checking the time, or as well intentioned as capturing the moment in a pic, and immediately get sucked into texts and instagram™️ and all the virtual things happening in this tiny lil demon light box. the goal: pull my phone out of my bag ONLY for phone things. that's texting, calling, and apps that can't be replaced the solutions so far:
🕰️ i started with a watch (shoutout Casio) and i wear it every day. once I broke the habit of checking my phone for the time, I felt legitimately freed from something Major
📷 I bought a small digital camera to leave in my bag. the pics look better and I don’t get distracted by the virtual world when I'm trying to capture something in the now
📚 I bought a kindle. It fits in my jacket pocket (literally) and gives me something to do when I'm on the train or waiting for an appointment that isn't scrolling I just realized so much of the time I spent on my phone was not intentional. It was a thing I was doing in between Other intentional moments. my screen time is still several hours a day (don’t get me wrong) but I think my brain has healed at least 3%. welcoming other ideas as well💡
I have made an effort to return to using the internet like I did when I was a kid: strictly using the computer for social media, youtube, and games. My phone is purely used for music and reading or art. I have gone from a 9 hour average of rotting on social media, to a 3 hour average of reading and listening to music per day. I didn't always have such a long screentime but since summer started I realized I was really wasting my life on my phone instead of enjoying summer. Even though social situations drain me, I have encouraged myself to go out more often and take the opprotunity to socialize. Now, it's not like this has solved all my problems, but the best thigns that have from it were being able to focus on new ways to bust boredom, like playing my dads bass and the piano a little bit. I also spent more time actualyl playing games with my friends too, which isnt productive really, but isnt something I regret either. Really the main thing this achived wasn't making me more productive or happier, but allowing me to focus on things I like and making me slightly more creative. It's just a better opprotunity to spend my time more wisely and avoid regret.
I often times rely on people to entertain me, or rely on them to go out and do things, which is rly bad, so I want to start being alone more and be more selfsufficient and rely on myself more. I've slowly already started this and i'm quite happy with how much better i've been :)
