My debut novel came out last year in the US, UK, and France, and I was struck by the panels/talks where people kept asking me about queer joy. I vouch for queer joy, of course, as a queer AF person whose art/writing delves inward in a cheeky way. BUT I write from the gay abyss, the mix of rage and melancholy that is just as important, valid, andâdare I sayâtriumphant. i canât really criticize the writing of this book, just because itâs the uniqueness and importance of this story that sets it apart. it is a story that absolutely needed to be written. whatâs even more amazing is that such simple writing could capture the lived intricacies of gender and sexuality in so many shades.
i had never felt seen like this.

This book was part of my challenge for myself to read more books from queer perspectives this year. Itâs now become one of my favourite books, period.
I feel like this book speaks primarily about identity, queerness, grief and drug use. But, it also explores these in a world where capitalism doesnât exist any longer, which I found really brought depths to the story in unexpected ways for me.
Chana Porter is a genius and I just cannot express how excellent this short book is.

So bold, funny, poetic, melodramatic, and shameless. Itâs hilarious that this is the opening paragraph of a 500 page memoir.
I love how she confesses these anxieties and apparent failures and yet also has this passion for life and writing to still tell people her story⌠like sheâs not getting over anything!! Who says you have to!
Also pioneer of lesbian relationship autofiction did I mention that

The superstition is this: on the first day of the month, one is supposed to say âRabbit, rabbitâ to ensure a month of good luck. I adore this superstition, like making a circle of protective salt around you for the entire 28, 30, or 31 days of a month. in theory, itâs supposed to be the first words you utter on that 1st day, but I make my life easier by just making sure I say it at some point during the day. I love superstitions, but I like also throwing in a bit of my own luck in there. So say ârabbit, rabbit,â why donât ya? Iâll say it several extra times in honor of those who read this a little later on.

Yes I work in a cemetery. My favorite part is saying hello to the graves. Judy Garland, Johnny Ramone, Rudolph Valentino, Pee-wee Herman. Honestly, itâs a sweet tribute being around them. I make it a point to visit cemeteries in most cities I visit, but this one holds a special place in my heart. Itâs one of my top two.
