Are coffee shops as big in the rest of the world as they are in LA? Ive become such a snob I can’t help but find comfort in a local coffee shop. The baristas call me Phil, ask me if I’m getting my large cold brew today. I say yes or the occasional no if I’ve had one elsewhere, that throws them off. What can I say, I’m a creature of habit! I think therefore I am? preposterous! I do the same things over and over therefore I am!

I look forward to coffee. It doesn't matter in what form. I look forward to the practice of making it or the practice of going out and buying it. Grinding, assembling the percolator, turning on the burner. Walking to the cafe. The light banter with the baristas. Filling up a cup at the gas station with the glass decanters. Pairing it with a donut dripping in glaze, or some jam and toast, a bagel and lox, a croissant. The names and orders shouted, the frenetic bustle of a midtown coffee shop, the quiet of a dusty cafe with cool aunt decor. An espresso before a night out (chic), a cup after a good dinner (ties it all together). The taste, the fact that it's such a widely acceptable drug that so many of us take. It's a small ritual we do to help us out a little bit. Get us ready, get us going.

Build a little routine while away from your usual routines by becoming a temporary regular at a coffeeshop. We loved Kanso in Munich, where they do pourovers served in gorgeous ceramics out of a terrazzo lined storefront. Also, it gives you a nice place to return to if/when you come back. An added rec is purchasing some beans to take home and asking the expert barista for the gram/water ratio and water temperature so you can recreate the experience at home.

i open at work a lot, i’m a barista at a coffee shop inside a fancy ish food market which is basically just an upscale cafeteria for business people who are too hip for sweetgreen. we’re the only booth that opens before 11 am here! and there are only 4 of us baristas now, there used to be more but recent drama has resulted in some serious jumping ship. it really just means our opener options went from 4 to 2, so i come in at 6:50 am a lot more. i’ve been getting to know the morning crowd better and better, i feel quite close to 8 oz americano, he always wishes me a good day, 12 oz iced chai with whole milk and a blueberry muffin is always kind as well, and oat milk flat white (except for one time he was 16 oz cold brew, we both laughed at that) smiles when he sees me.  i like to be the smiley barista they get to have a minimal morning chat with, and plus i feel cool saying “just the usual?”

I wish I could speak every language to converse with everyone around the world! There’s something tantalizing about having this ability. Perhaps because deep conversations are a doorway into someone‘s upbringing and people’s cultures, and there is so much joy in hearing someone‘s story. In another lifetime, surely I was a polyglot enjoying company from people all around the world!
