i donāt know why or how but the occasion to say this actually comes up fairly often?
itās a reference to the scene in lady bird when lady bird and julie get in their big argument and lady bird says she refused to be in the play bc she was cast as the tempest in william shakespeareās the tempest. which is not a role. though it is the titular role.
my best friend and i more or less use this as a replacement for ācase in pointā (but the delivery is important. it canāt be itās the titular role. it has to be itās the TITular. ROLE.) and itās endlessly funny to me.
In 2012 I had just moved to the states and one of my bffs sent me an fb message detailing all the high school drama that I had missed out on since my departure. She ended the message with "it's on like donkey kong >:)", specifically about some guy she had a crush on looking her way. it doesn't really make sense, but i use this phrase at least once a month 12 years later
here, iāll get you started:
- had to be there
- for tax purposes
- and iāve always said that
- iāll allow it
- thatās above my paygrade
- godspeed
- somethings amissā¦
- even a worm will turn
- whose to say
- likewise
- indubitably
- but at what cost
- iāll have it known
- bobs your uncle
- many people are saying this
- thems the game
- iām here all night (when you say something funny)
- what is this....amateur hour?
if the text requires more than 3 sentences itās a voice memo! the efficiency of just getting to speak! the intimacy of sending your voice and the process of gathering your thoughts in real time! the presence of tone and vocal inflection! i actually aspire to only ever communicate via phone calls and voice memos. texting is such a menace in my life.
