They have such a light but powerful scent. Instantly sends me on a nostalgia trip to my old elementary school where we used to have one right next to the softball diamond. It was always the meeting place for my close friend and I over recess when weā€˜d meet to discuss the novel we cowrote (Novel being generous). To me, they are creativity and first crushes incarnate.

There have been a handful of occasions where I’ve smelled the now-discontinued shampoo my mom’s late best gay friend Jackie used (who called me his little bitch when I was growing up and taught me everything I know about style, elegance, and attitude) and it made me cry. The smells of lumber, soil, and wood varnish remind me of the countless hours spent in my childhood with my dad in the greenhouse, the back patio workshop and at various supply warehouses. The smell of creosote in the desert rain—sorely missed and I want to buy a candle or something that replicates this because it’s my favorite scent in the world. L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme on a shirt-collar takes me back to the warmth and security of first love and reminds me of what it feels like to be home. I’ve posted that I wear Fracas every time I want to remember a happy significant day so that’s probably my most strongly nostalgic scent. The smell of old books and cigarettes! When I come into my apartment after stepping out for just a moment after making espresso and the lingering smell makes me feel like I’m in a cafe! The smell of a REAL Christmas tree! Yesterday at the farmerā€˜s market I smelled a butterfly bush plant for sale and childhood memories came flooding back. Juicy Couture by Juicy Couture was my grandmother's signature scent because she liked the Schnauzers on the bottle so Tuberose always reminds me of her + the smell of face powder. I could go on forever…

growing up my older sister was my best friend & my idol. shes 10 years older than me so she had her own life & lived away from us. But one time when she came back & moved close to us again, I loved to visit her at her apartment until she once again moved away. This time before she left I took a pen from her house because it smelled like her. I remember I had that pen in my bag for at least two full school years, & I’d never use it lest i scrub away my sisters scent. I’d smell it and tuck it in a safe spot in my school bag hoping & wishing hard that my sister would come visit soon. It brings me deep nostalgia and longing whenever the scent wafts in my direction, even today As an adult. My sisters ā€œsignatureā€ scent, btw? Weed & cigarettes. I was too little to put 2n2 together lol

This week was horribly inconsistent in terms of weather, but spring is certainly fighting to warm things up. Even winter’s vestiges can’t help but display the promise of warmth and new life. The way the ice is melting and cracking in waves doesn’t hurt the eyes either. Despite the lack of greenery, there can still be growth.

In place of ā€œI’m gonna kill myselfā€œ when frustrated. It’s a really small change and you probably won’t even notice the difference, but it’s a really easy way to start reframing bad self talk and it’s helped me feel better about myself overall.

Suuuuuper quick and easy to make. I like adding extra garlic and onion and either tofu or bacon depending on my mood. Extra gochujang paste and vinegar helps if you have limited kimchi juice, but I definitely recommend getting a big jar. Top with gim, sesame seeds, and a fried egg.
