After work today, I went to my storage unit office to handle some business. I left my phone in my car because I needed to go to my indoor unit after my office visit. I wanted any calls or notifications to show. It is frequent that cell service does reach deep in the interior of metal aisles and roofing. The office was slow and quiet. There was an old style clock on the wall. The kind that used to be in schools (hell maybe they still are). The kind where the second hand makes an audible tick. In the midst of the silence, the tick of the second hand brought me back to childhood. The boredom of being at a doctor office waiting. The slowness of being at my grandparents house with nothing to keep entertained. The focus of taking a test in school. This was a moment I realized how fast life goes. How we don't need to have stimulation every minute of the day. From Spotify in the background to watching a Tik Tok while passing time, sitting and doing nothing can be uncomfortable, but can have so much reward. Meditation of sort. Allows for the accessibility of deep memories and our thoughts that get pushed out from day-to-day life.

One time I was planning a solo cabin trip and I was worried about how I’d fill the time. What if I don’t make the most of it? Won’t I be bored? Someone told me — the boredom is part of it. They were right! Being bored is an important part of the human experience. It is necessary suffering. The absence of distractions is more important than anything. It allows the mind to rest and then wander. The absence forces you to confront things you are avoiding. If you want to find a “use” for it, it can prompt creativity. Put the phone down and let yourself be bored. We need it. It’s a process.

I love those moments when you focus on your breath for a couple of seconds, and the world comes into focus. Like you're present where you are for the first time. Makes me feel so calm. I do wonder though, is this what it was like all the time for the generations before phones? If so, damn... I'm jealous

This morning I brought my car to the mechanic first thing. Didn’t have anywhere to be for the rest of the day, so challenged myself to enjoy a slow walk home—could have been 40 min, ultimately took 4 hours. I stopped to smell my neighbors‘ flowers, to buy a new pencil at the art store, and to read in a park for a while (big shoutout to the Libby app and city parks). I‘ve been talking to a therapist about how I wake up every morning worried about whatever I have scheduled, and tend to ruminate on failures towards the end of the day. Today I didn’t dwell on the future or the past, just lived in the present. 10/10 experience.

My partners birthday is coming up. I think one of the best parts of gift giving is about the details. I found this wrapping paper, and I love it. I think the thought in the little details can mean more than the actual gift.
