There are plenty of artists around whom I don’t need to separate from their art, so I’ll stick with them. But it’s not like I’ve given up much. I really liked Louis CK’s tv shows, but I probably wouldn’t have watched them again anyway. Cosby, Woody Allen I wouldn’t be interested in regardless. Maybe Picasso would be a test for me, but it’s not like I’m a modern art lover. And reminding people anytime they bring up Rosemary’s Baby that Roman Polanski sodomized a 13 year old and fled the country is kind of a hobby of mine now.

woody allen's work is definitely a great example of: first of all it's not that good in the first place so why do people defend him so hard, and second of all from his very first film his creepiness is on full display. what's the use in separating the art from the artist if the art is full of the nasty shit you're supposed to be separating it from anyway. never understood people's obsession with defending him when his disgusting attitudes toward women and girls are a huge part of every single thing he makes anyway, regardless of what he's "accused" of. (quotes bc i believe dylan farrow 100%) and the polanski thing... i'm so interested in rosemary's baby but just can't watch it because all i can think about is his poor victim. i plan to read the book so i can enjoy the story without interacting with a polanski product.

@STARLET HOW lol it's like the most famous thing about him. that's why he can't come back to america to accept any oscars bc he's not allowed back in the country bc he was convicted of raping a child and fled. that's why there's massive protests every time he wins anything, because he's a convicted rapist and pedophile that people keep giving awards to

@STARLET this is why I bring it up! It’s disgusting that he ever made another movie after that, let alone had success or received awards.

As someone who worries about this stuff a lot I take some solace in knowing that other, more creative people also feel this way and have expressed this feeling in creative ways. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but some of my favorites are the Coen Brothers' A Serious Man and the unfortunately-titled Lolita Nation by Game Theory

i feel like it’s this constant debate but the thing is? there’s millions of artists/musicians/etc out there, so i find when you want to hold on so tightly to someone, you’re closing yourself off from other artists that could be similar or way cooler but not a terrible person obviously there’s a distinction between a faux pas, mistakes before growth, or being deeply consistently horrible, but i absolutely think that’s a distinction worth making… we only have so much time on this earth, and our time to consume art and music and film and literature is fleeting, so i’d rather spend it on the works of people who have earnestly made the world a more beautiful place and exploring art to find those !

I think this is a great discussion. Here’s an article I found that I think helps describe the complexity of separating art from artist. For a long time I really hated Picasso‘s work because of who he was. But since learning more about his art alone, his style, his influences, I cant help but appreciate and recognize his impact on the arts.

I’m not sure why, I guess things ending are sad. Here’s a self portrait I made in charcoal. The proportions are wonky but it kinda looks like me!

The occupation persists, the oppression persists, the torture persists. The occupiers are psychotic and their work is never finished. People who’ve paid attention won’t be surprised by this photo from Gaza.

I’m 50, I say because that makes me unusual in this context. I paid [redacted] for a ticket to the Eras Tour after listening to tswift for 3 weeks, and it was worth it. In second grade my teacher gave kids birthday spankings over her knee, and in sixth grade my teacher told my mom I hadn’t blossomed yet. I’m a good friend, mostly to people on the internet. I’m good at conversing with strangers. I’m usually the oldest person at the show but don’t feel like it. I’m good at being helpful. I’m sarcastic and funny and make myself laugh. I’m a good graphic designer and a conscientious driver. I’m a good photographer and I can successfully follow recipes. I don’t use my Peloton enough. I did a lot of caregiving for my mom for several years, and we enjoyed spending time together even if it was mostly in waiting rooms and my car. The fastest I ever ran a mile was eight minutes and six seconds. I drove the same car for 20 years and then replaced it with another one. I enjoy tipping, giving money to people on the street and Disneyland. I am a fan of baseball, Formula 1 racing and the Criterion Channel. I solve about 80% of New York Times crosswords. I take Prozac and Wellbutrin, and take Trazodone to sleep through the night. I wish I had a glassed in solarium so I could sleep in it on rainy nights. I would like to have a pet cat and a garage. I could happily live eating only cereal and fruit. I overshare on the internet and undershare elsewhere. ✌️💛
