I remember a guy in the dorm room next to mine freshman year who would get stoned all the time. He had the stoner eyes and the slow gravelly voice and generally seemed totally out of it. Two years later we had a class together and he was like a different person! Come to think of it I saw the same with another dorm-mate.
You made mistakes, but you made them at the right time! Maybe you’ll retake some classes, maybe next summer you take a course to make up what you missed.
You have lots of opportunities to get on track.
And you don’t have to do it alone. A nice thing about college is you know other people are going through the sa mme things as you. You certainly aren’t the only person on campus with a drinking problem!

You’re only 1 year in, so you have the remaining 75% of your time in university to make up for it. Yes, it’ll show on your transcript, the way my D in a critical prerequisite and my F in calculus show up on mine. But retaking classes and doing better shows tenacity and self improvement! The first year away from home is hard for so many people, but showing that you came back from that is going to be a good thing!
I’m nervous to try to give specific advice about alcohol, since I’m not an addiction counselor or anything like that. But I want you to know that I also had a time like that in college, and so did a lot of my friends. But we’re on the other side of it now and it’s possible to get better, I promise.
But my overarching message is that you have TIME. You can get past this and it will show that you have grit and determination. You still have your goals and dreams, and the student you were when you started out is still in you somewhere. It’s going to be okay 💛

Try not to let otherpeople’s drinking keep you from doing things (until they become obnoxious, then go home)
Be yourself, do what you like and look for people tolove
Don’t assume your first roommate is your new best friend!
Honestly college people these days seem so much cooler than back in my day!

Im aslo in my senior year and its definitely been a wild ride. Though most if that ride was me being an overachiever and burning out midway and having to learn its okay to take it slow I don't have to achieve everything so early on.
I lucked out and was able to get an off campus apartment and not have to stay in the dorms my entire time at school, so that saved me a lot of money and really allowed me to, I think enjoy college more because i was able to do my own thing and have my own space.
I've made a lot of new friends in the last few years and some friendships I think are going to live past the convenience of being in college and same department.
I think over all it was a rough start but by the end of it here overall it was worth it and I've had a great time!

I’m 50, I say because that makes me unusual in this context. I paid [redacted] for a ticket to the Eras Tour after listening to tswift for 3 weeks, and it was worth it. In second grade my teacher gave kids birthday spankings over her knee, and in sixth grade my teacher told my mom I hadn’t blossomed yet. I’m a good friend, mostly to people on the internet. I’m good at conversing with strangers. I’m usually the oldest person at the show but don’t feel like it. I’m good at being helpful. I’m sarcastic and funny and make myself laugh. I’m a good graphic designer and a conscientious driver. I’m a good photographer and I can successfully follow recipes. I don’t use my Peloton enough. I did a lot of caregiving for my mom for several years, and we enjoyed spending time together even if it was mostly in waiting rooms and my car. The fastest I ever ran a mile was eight minutes and six seconds. I drove the same car for 20 years and then replaced it with another one. I enjoy tipping, giving money to people on the street and Disneyland. I am a fan of baseball, Formula 1 racing and the Criterion Channel. I solve about 80% of New York Times crosswords. I take Prozac and Wellbutrin, and take Trazodone to sleep through the night. I wish I had a glassed in solarium so I could sleep in it on rainy nights. I would like to have a pet cat and a garage. I could happily live eating only cereal and fruit. I overshare on the internet and undershare elsewhere. ✌️💛
