I didn’t know anything about this book before I read it, so the book was able to affect me fully. Now, things like the movie have spoiled many of its themes, but the book captures them incredibly well and with such a light touch. It’s a heartbreaking book but one well worth the read.

made the mistake of looking at goodreads reviews for this book after i finished it (my fault i know) and was so shocked by how many people hated it bc the characters "don't do anything about their situation." that's the point! that's the tragedy folks!

@DRACULA If they didn’t want to lead tragic lives, they should have pulled themselves up by their bootstraps and joined an MLM like the rest of us!

@LUCIUS I have! Just last year. It’s the only other Ishiguro book I’ve been fortunate enough to read (cuz I’m bad at finishing books lol). I liked it, especially as a fan of robots.

@LUCIUS I haven’t read Never Let Me Go yet, but I adored Klara. And the author said Klara was spiritually inspired by Never Let Me Go

It’s by Kazuo Ishiguro. I love the style of writing. It’s sensitive and exciting and relatable. I also enjoy the philosophy behind the story that unfolds. And of course, the way it unfolds!

On a Kazuo Ishiguro kick in the last few months. Fell for the beautiful, understated humanity of his work.

when I visited my friend Nico’s house last winter, they gave me their own copy of ‘The Remains of the day‘ presenting it as a book that changed their way of seeing life. To be honest it is a very powerful and lovely novel, the characters feel very real but also very dreamlike, all of them are described with their own set of traits which makes this short novel a very nice time. it took a while for me to finish it but it’s very light. I wasn’t very familiar with Ishiguro’s work but this was a great introduction.

I’m not a parent and do not plan to be. Kids can wear me out fast with their high energy and noise level; it leaves me very over-stimulated. But it’s pretty extreme when people say they ”hate kids” and I often feel it’s a reflection of their childhood and beliefs around how kids “should be.” That they were expected to be quiet, obedient, and out of the way by their parents when they were little. It’s fucking hard to be a kid. You’re dealing with a rapidly-changing body and underdeveloped brain, managed by flawed adults who are enforcing boundaries that you do not understand. It’s confusing and hard to manage your feelings and honestly just a lot. People are impatient with kids when they‘re brand new to the world and figuring it all out, and this is a time kids need a friend the most. Children can also be teachers to adults with how they are less habituated to the world. They teach us how to be free and open-hearted and silly and imaginative. A good practice is to be kinder and gentler with kids. If that feels difficult, start with gentleness toward your inner child. Maybe that’s the child in your life that needs your attention and kindness most.
