charming volunteer-run museum full of tiny wonders! Also smells good if you enjoy the musk of years-gone-by

Roughly an hour outside of New Orleans there’s a place called Abita Mystery House. Park yourself on the corner and enter through the gas station. John Preble started this place a while back under the name UCM Museum. It’s basically a collection of antiques, oddities, and folk art of various kinds. It’s full of buttons to press and games to play and Preble made the place all on his own! It is a beautiful show of imagination and decadence full of weird and wonderful art projects and archive. The best part is the neighbor‘s cat will accompany you the whole time and likely let you pick her up and hold her like an infant.

Highly recommend having a museum friend date with weird and playing “tag urself“ and opting into the audio tour and getting chills at the sheer amount of little guys and monsters

Make you remember how beautifully complex, abundant and mysterious the natural world is and how we're just a small part of it. It's like Wikipedia-surfing irl I visited my local one yesterday, strolled around the permanent exhibition, looked at the current photography show and bought a couple of owl postcards on my way out. It's probably my favorite local museum because of how old-fashioned it is - no screens, just printed text, quiet atmosphere, very beautiful old building. It was so relaxing and soothing for my head
