There were two Margarets in our family; she was 5’1” hence the nickname. Born in County Clare 🇮🇪 - I doubt she even knew her real mom - and raised in poverty in LA by a relative once she had landed in the U.S. She made amazing oatmeal and tuna sandwiches when I was sad; she lived close enough to my parents that sometimes I would walk home to her house instead of my parents’ on the way home from school. I went through confirmation only because of her (didn’t believe much in Catholicism otherwise and still don’t). I lived with her for awhile one summer during college. She was an amazing roommate. I learned so much about life and our family. She was my favorite human, our family matriarch / badass and I miss her everyday. Thanks Gran ❤️

i’m lucky enough still have a grandmother in my mid 30s—which I think is an age where you’re settled enough to finally get to know your adult family members on a personal level. The generation gap definitely means I’m always on my toes when we hang out cos I can never predict what she’s gonna do, but she’s funny and wise, makes friends wherever she goes, doesn’t give af, is a mean cook, can do quiet company like no one else, and loves me to smithereens.

My grandmother is wonderful and connected to an unknowable plane of existence. She sees my late grandfather in the butterflies on her front porch.

i deleted instagram like three years ago. intermittently on tiktok (like two-day binges every six months). no twitter and nothing else. i love this little app because it succeeds where all the others fail now: in building community. that’s everything IMO. i feel so free everyday and can’t imagine having mainstream social media anymore, between the ads, the people i don’t care about, the pressure, and the whole ickiness of it.

i have always had an issue with the norm of referring to an animal as “it” instead of he, she, or they. it feels so disrespectful to me. let’s normalize giving personhood to the more-than-human world !

and don’t try to get them to change their mind. just have a conversation. you don’t even have to talk about the thing. you may learn something, but i bet that you’ll feel more connected in a broader sense after you do.
