Most musicians have terrible home stereos. They generally put all their resources toward studio gear which makes practical sense. 5-6 years back I made the unpractical choice to invest in my home system. After a lot of trial and error, I landed on components by this company in upstate NY called EM/IA. Itâs pricey but I got lucky and found a used pair of their 50 amps and then got one of their passive pre amps (elmaformer). I listen to more music now than ever and thatâs the best review I can give.
With most people defaulting to using sound bars for their TV nowadays, we have lost out on the stereo nature of most audio mediums. For a few hundred dollars, you can get a full system that connects your TV, record player, and gaming console all in one place. Youâll be shocked at the difference that two separate speakers and a subwoofer can make on your music and show audio quality. You can buy a decent system new online, or you can capitalize off suburban families swapping their system out every few years and go to an estate sale or lurk on Facebook marketplace.
I thought I could get by with inexpensive earbuds. But I bought nice over ear headphones for video editing and, the first time I listened to my favorite band on them, I learned how much I was missing. Falling asleep listening to an album on these is one of my small pleasures.
I own probably 5 pairs of over-ear headphones for varying purposes (and having a bad itch for buying audio listening gear). These ones are my favorite, for a cheaper option the Sony 1000XM3's are still a great model and since theyre like 3 gens old in the ever-churning technology deathmaw we live in you can find em for 160$ regularly. Avoid the Apple Max at all cost they're so shite and so overpriced. If you're looking for wired headphones basically every musician or dj I know owns a pair of audio technica ATH-M50x's and I've had my pair for 9 years now and they're still going strong.
I watch a lot of anime and a new one I like is âMashle: Magic and Musclesâ. Gist is overpowered, the stoic protagonist who canât use magic goes to Hogwarts. Probably wonât be a classic like âRanking of Kingsâ or âVinland Sagaâ but just a good time and one people who donât watch much anime can enjoy too.
One of my favorite records of last year and one I find myself coming back to often is Jeff Parkerâs âMondays at the Enfield Tennis Academy.â Recorded by my friend Bryce Gonzalez live at ETA in Los Angeles. The Sonics of the record and the chemistry of the band are top-notch.
