you‘re at your dumb job and a customer asks your name totally out of nowhere - kinda creepy but whatever. you answer and they mishear you. you are now forever ”carlo” to them and you roll with it. delivery guy asks you to sign for some random box, suddenly you are now “vincent” - nobody knows better, nobody gets hurt, you keep a little bit of privacy. lying? nah, it’s just creating boundaries in the form of a disguise

i thought it was kinda funny to give people a completely different name when they ask for mine but i did it to this girl once and the joke went on for too long. when the reveal finally came it wasn’t that funny anymore bc i had been quietly laughing to myself about it like a psycho for days and she was just confused. i would still do it again.

the lore isn't that deep buuuuuuut reading everyone's responses reminded me that, around the time i was 25, i read something about trolls and online communities, and how the best spaces are the ones where people feel accountable to each other. i think anonymity plays a big influence in that, so i use my real name online because i want to normalize doing so, and also because i want to reduce the distinctions between online eth and irl eth.

back in school i used to help or hinder my teachers based purely on their first impression when they did the first registration call.
they'd get to about the middle of the list and just pause. and i knew. i knew it was me.
if good vibes - i'd raise my hand and put them out of their misery
if bad vibes - nothing about my expression would betray my position even in the slightest. you would think i was under the impression that i have the most straighforward, easily pronouncable name in existence. and then i would make them guess. guess until they got somewhere close enough for me to go "oh, i think thats me?"
