Tempest - particularly gnarly part of SoMa so I wouldn’t rec if it weren’t a great dive bar.
Molloy’s - just south of the city in Colma, depressing cemetery city by SFO that you can access with Bart. 19th century historic saloon that’s now a bar full of a ton of characters. The taco truck outside is fantastic and known as one of the Bay’s top players.
Ruby Room - downtown Oakland by the 14th st BART stop, also pretty gnarly area these days. Red light, as the name suggests, and very open to you smoking whatever inside.

Oh, the lure of San Francisco
I always dreamed I would end up living there as an adult because my parents lived there when they were young and hot in the 90s. I visited a lot growing up and was always enchanted. Ended up going to Berkeley for school and by then the vibe in SF
was already off. Expensive and full of tech bros wearing backpacks at bars and increasingly soulless. The housing crisis is devastating and visible on every street you walk down. I went last October for work and it felt so haunted.
But if you must
đŸ–€ Scoma’s (fancy lunch in fisherman’s wharf, get the Crab Louie and a martini) đŸ–€ Tommy’s Joynt (no fuss meat sandwiches & cheap cocktails) đŸ–€ Vesuvio (perfect bar, iSpy vibes in terms of decor) đŸ–€ Tommasso’s (best italian. Get the chilled broccoli and some sort of pizza with arugula on it) đŸ–€ Swensen’s (my favorite ice cream in the world. I miss it and dream of it. Get sticky chewy chocolate or banana) đŸ–€ House of Nanking (go when you’re starving for Hot Food! you may have to wait a little but it won’t be that long. Get the green beans and if they have congee, by god get that. Also ask for chili oil) đŸ–€ The East Bay!! (Go to Berkeley and Oakland. They’re better lol)

a big pet peeve I have is people complaining about not having community or only having “party friends” etc BUT are they inviting their existing friends or acquaintances to go out for dinner, go thrifting, watch tv, book club, people watch, day trip, mulberry picking? no, they are not. are they introducing their friends to each other? also not. i hate to be a clichĂ© sometimes you gotta put some work into having the relationships you long for. plus: you’re part of the problem. AND have some appreciation for the friends you have instead of focusing so much in what you don’t.

Nothing annoys me more about the American culture than the lack of enthusiasm. If I invite you to go somewhere and your answer is “sure” or “why not”, I’m taking it back. I do not wanna be surrounded by indifferent people. It’s unworthy.
